Big days from Bradley, Bubba give US 5-3 lead

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? Keegan Bradley went from a rookie to a rock star in the Ryder Cup, and Phil Mickelson saw it coming.

Moments after Bradley poured in an 18-foot birdie putt on the second hole Friday morning, Mickelson stood off to the side of the tee box to watch Bradley prepare to smash another drive. He nodded in the direction of Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia, who had never lost a foursomes match.

Mickelson grinned and said, "They're not going to know what hit them."

Turns out he wasn't just talking about one match. Bradley made a 25-foot birdie putt to win the opening match on the 15th hole. Then, Bradley and Mickelson ganged up on Europe's top tandem of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, winning three straight holes out of the box and closing them out when Mickelson hit a 7-iron to 2 feet on the 17th hole at Medinah.

It set the tone for a day filled with endless cheering and plenty of American red on the scoreboard, giving the U.S. team a 5-3 lead over Europe despite Tiger Woods getting shut out on opening day for the fourth time in the Ryder Cup.

"It could be the best day of my life," Bradley said.

Saturday figures to be a strange day for Woods in the Ryder Cup ? his first time in uniform without a tee time. Sticking to his plan, U.S. captain Davis Love decided to bench Woods in the third session of matches to make sure his team is rested for the decisive singles matches Sunday. That ends Woods' streak of playing in 31 consecutive matches.

As for Bradley? His energy is boundless.

Mickelson took Bradley under his wing last year for a series of money games at the majors to prepare the 26-year-old from New England for a stage like this. And did he ever deliver. He was into every shot, cocking his head to the side to read putts, charging up the gallery and Mickelson in a command performance.

"This is literally what I've dreamt about since I was a little kid," Bradley said. "I got to do it next to my idol all day."

He wasn't the only rookie to shine on a mild day in the Chicago suburbs.

Nicolas Colsaerts, the 29-year-old from Belgium, helped Europe avoid getting shut out in afternoon fourballs by single-handedly taking down Woods and Steve Stricker.

Colsaerts made eight birdies and an eagle ? a 10-under 62 if he was keeping score on his own. He teamed with Lee Westwood, who was just along for this amazing ride for a 1-up victory that ended 11 hours of action so typical in this high-charged event.

"I don't think there has ever been a better debut than that," Westwood said.

Woods and Stricker also lost to Ian Poulter and Justin Rose in morning foursomes, making this the fourth time in the seven Ryder Cups that Woods has played that he lost both matches on the opening day.

There was nothing Woods could do against Colsaerts, the biggest hitter in Europe who isn't too bad with the putter, either.

"Nicolas probably had one of the greatest putting rounds I've ever seen," Woods said, high praise coming from a 14-time major champion.

Woods turned in a mixed performance. He missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 15th to fall 2 down, and then came back with a bending, 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th and a shot into 4 feet on the 17th that looked as if it might square the match. Instead, Colsaerts rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt for a halve. Woods had a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th to halve the match, only it caught the left lip.

"We ran into a guy who made everything today," Woods said. "I don't know what he shot. He was like 7 under through 10. I quit counting after that."

Love said he told Woods and Stricker they would be sitting out the foursomes matches Saturday morning, "and I can guarantee you, neither one of them are very happy about it. Not because they are sitting out; because they have to wait till tomorrow afternoon to come back."

Both captains made sure all 12 of their players got into the game early, though European captain Jose Maria Olazabal set himself up for second-guessing when he sat out Donald, Garcia and Poulter for the afternoon matches. They have a combined 31-13-5 record in the Ryder Cup.

Olazabal put Donald and Westwood together for Saturday morning, while Colsaerts will play with Garcia. McIlroy and McDowell will play for a third time, although the Spanish captain said the pairings were not the problem.

"I'm going to make it clear to the boys that they need to step it up," he said. "They need to play better golf, simple as that. There is no secret about this game. You have to make more birdies than your opponent. And if you don't do that, you're going to struggle."

Mickelson set an American record by playing in his ninth Ryder Cup, and he won his opening two matches for the first time in his career. Mickelson came up with some big putts and amazing shots, and the 42-year-old felt about 10 years younger playing alongside Bradley.

"I felt young," Mickelson said. "And it felt great."

Europe has won six of the last eight times in the Ryder Cup, and it wasn't about to hang its head after one day. It was leading all four of the opening matches early Friday under a gloomy sky. The sun came out, and the Americans came to life.

"There's a long way to go in this tournament," Rose said. "There's ebbs and flows. Obviously, there's momentum for the U.S. team right now, but that could all swing back in our favor tomorrow."

Even so, the Americans headed to their team room full of confidence. It won five of eight matches without getting a point from Woods, and they picked up a little extra momentum when Mickelson and Bradley took down McIlroy, the No. 1 player in the world.

The Ryder Cup again lived up to its billing as the most exciting tournament in golf with relentless action, huge swings in momentum and endless cheers.

Bubba Watson asked the crowd to keep chanting and cheering when he stepped to the tee for his afternoon fourballs with Webb Simpson, and the Masters champion belted his drive down the middle, raising his driver to play to the crowd. Then, the Americans did a number of Paul Lawrie and Peter Hanson, going 6 up through eight holes and closing them out on the 14th hole.

Matt Kuchar ran off four straight birdies as he and Dustin Johnson built an early lead against Rose and Martin Kaymer.

The only rookie who didn't deliver a point was FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker, though it wasn't from a lack of effort. Snedeker and Furyk were 3 down through 12 holes against McIlroy and McDowell in the morning when they put together a furious rally, with Furyk carrying the bulk of the load. They squared the match going to the 18th when Snedeker hit a drive toward the hospitality tents well right of the fairway, and Furyk couldn't convert a 20-foot par putt to halve the match.

But it was a sign of the American fight.

Bradley was at his best on the par-3 13th, perhaps the toughest tee shot because it was long and into the wind, requiring a hybrid. He hit it to 15 feet left of the flag, and as the crowd chanted, "USA! USA!" Bradley nodded at them repeatedly.

Mickelson, who first played in these matches in 1995, smiled and gently patted him on the back to let him soak up the moment. Lefty then holed the birdie putt for a 2-up lead, and Garcia missed a 3 1/2-foot par putt on the next hole. It was the Spaniard's first loss in 10 foursomes matches dating to 1999.

Bradley was so into the moment that his focus was broken walking up the 15th hole when he spotted fans holding a large American flag on the left side of the gallery. He jogged over to them for high-fives, waited for Mickelson to play a wedge into the green, and then holed the 25-foot birdie putt.

His caddie, Steve Hale, swung the flagstick around like a baseball bat until Mickelson's caddie reminded him to put it in the hole for Donald to play a bunker shot.

"There's a simple reason why Keegan is perfect for the Ryder Cup," Mickelson said. "The more pressure the situation, the better he plays, the better he sees the shot, the better he focuses. And the better the result. As a player, you feel more pressure and intensity during these matches than you do at any other event.

"And that's when he's at his best."

Jason Dufner, another American rookie, actually showed some emotion with a tiny fist pump when his 15-foot birdie putt on the ninth stopped next to the cup, then dropped in the left side. Dufner made birdie on the next hole for a foursomes win with Zach Johnson over Westwood and Francesco Molinari.

Poulter holed a bunker shot, a long birdie putt and a clutch par putt from 7 feet on the 16th hole that carried he and Rose to victory over Woods and Stricker. Poulter has lost only three times in 12 matches in his Ryder Cup career. Two of those had been to Woods.

"I never wanted to have another one," Poulter said.

Next up is another long day of foursomes and fourballs, a chance for Europe to get back in the game going into the Sunday singles.

Love could not have asked for a better start, particularly from his rookies ? and especially from Bradley, who was sad to see this dream day come to an ed.

"Oh, baby," Bradley said. "I wish we could go 36 more."

Enrich This Journey We Call Life! | Medical Schools In Florida

You can change your life forever and for the better when you change the way you think, this is the start when it comes to self improvement. This article provides helpful tips to get you focused on your self improvement, while improving your life and how you live it.

When you?re looking for employment, having a degree is often essential. It typically does not matter what school that degree came from though. Finance jobs are one of the few exceptions, as your school will matter a great deal. In the end, the important thing is to have a degree, any degree, to open the doors of opportunity for you.

A great tip for personal development is to make sure that you place value on what you consider to be the best. Therefore, you have to know what you value, and make it a priority for you.

You may experience excess stress when you overreact to difficult situations. Analyze the situation carefully, and deal with the stress. If you make a mistake, own up to it, fix it, and move on. Prioritize your achievements over your failures.

Find out how successful people improved themselves. You can avoid a lot of trial and error by learning what other successful people have done in your situation. Think of reading about their stories as an important step in your own development.

Figure out what you want your life to be and do what it takes to accomplish it. If you spend all your time dreaming about what you want to happen in your life, yet do little to create that life, that life will never happen. Take action with the goal of realizing your dreams.

Talking with a counselor or a pastor can be beneficial. Spiritual and secular counselors are licensed, trained and experienced in dealing with a number of different issues. They are there to help you analyze and sort through issues and feelings that occur on your personal journey to enlightenment. Talking to someone who knows how to listen and help will make you happier, and allow you to reach your goals.

You should always have an idea as to what you personal values are before you develop a plan for personal growth. You will not be happy or motivated if your plan goes against what you believe in. Seek out areas of your life that you can develop that you can spend your energy on without going against what you hold important in life. Implementing a plan for personal development can improve both your work and home life in the future.

When you are trying to improve yourself, you should aim to have a high amount of self-discipline. Learn not to give in every time your body craves something that may not be good for it. Overindulgence, overeating, lust, and selfishness are all base impulses that you can overcome. By having restraint and self-control, you?ll have the ability to prevent these harmful habits from harming your body and mind.

Sexual capital is an important new trait undergoing research. This isn?t using sexuality for getting what you desire. It?s more like using your charm. Since some people do not have good skills socially, it will help them get farther in certain life aspects.

If you want to make progress in the area of self improvement, you need to declare lowliness. If you acknowledge you are tiny and unimportant in the world, it will cause you to realize the lack of knowledge you have. A humble attitude puts you in the right mindset to learn new things and develop as a human being.

Are you finding it hard to meet someone special? Have you considered online dating? There have been quite a few couples these days that have met on the web. That perfect someone could be looking for you right now. There are both advantages and disadvantages to these sites.

When it comes to serious issues, sometimes therapy or professional help might be the best solution. While self-help books can be effective, many cannot provide the benefits that come from personal, targeted interaction with a therapist. Even the simple act of having someone impartial that you can talk to can improve your chances for success. The therapeutic discussion that you can have with a psychiatrist, is beyond the abilities of even the most comprehensive and detailed self-help book.

Ego and self esteem can suffer as a result of failure when one is striving to make strides in the area of personal development. The truth about failure is that it is a learning experience in disguise. It is a way to discover what you are good at and what you might struggle with. When you look at it from that perspective, failure can be considered a good thing, as it helps you know more about your personal makeup.

The ability to empathize represents an important step in personal development. You can cultivate a strong, positive character, by learning how to make sacrifices for the sake of helping others. You will be a better person, and be recognized as such, when you take steps to benefit other people, regardless of your own gain or loss.

Make some attainable short-term and long-term personal development goals. Long at the difference between the place you are in right now and where you will be after achieving these. Acknowledge the difference. This is the beginning to starting a journey to a better you. Without this epiphany, you won?t be able to take the steps necessary to improve yourself.

Keep in mind the power of complimenting other people. You can reverse the process, though. Being kind and positive to other people puts you in a good mindset and encourages you to treat yourself right.

Always do the best you can. You should always want to be the best you can be. The fact is that we can never be the absolute best at a single thing, but we can aspire to be an inspiration to others in our fields. Increase your professional skillset, and you will feel a lot better about yourself.

You can?t tend to others needs until your own needs are met. Whether you?re just starting your personal development plan or are well down the road and regardless of whether you?re succeeding or failing, you have to set aside time for yourself to rest, relax, and regroup.

You only need to remember one key to live and lead a successful life. Make the choice to be active in life and avoid being a spectator. Sitting back and watching will make you dull and unhappy.

Self improvement starts with leadership. The key to being a leader is influence, according to most people. Reflect back on your leadership experiences. Are there any events that have had an impact in your life? What changes have occurred thanks to these events? What qualities make you an effective member of the team? By examining yourself through answering these questions, you can help yourself realize your role and ability in a team.

Have a special account for emergencies. Most of us depend on credit cards to pay for unexpected expenses. By putting aside only a few dollars each week, you can rapidly build a respectable emergency fund. Having an emergency fund in place can help provide a safety net throughout all the phases of one?s financial life.

Make a list of your priorities, and plan your life around these elements. By concentrating on those things that you cherish and appreciate, you?re less likely to be pessimistic and to brood over adverse situations that are of little consequence.

Establish a very detailed plan to improve your life. If you set goals that are clearly laid out, you will improve your chances of meeting or surpassing them. You will have an easier time overcoming your challenges and you will be able to have success quicker.

Understanding that you are worthy of the best will help you to reach your self improvement goals. You have no one to disappoint but yourself. In the end, you will know that you did all that you can and you will not have any regrets.

Find people you can relate to. This will reinforce the aspects of your personality that you are seeking to develop, while allowing you to distance yourself from toxic individuals in your life.

If you see yourself failing to reach goals, then you need to analyze the situation to figure out what the problem is. Check online and find others whom share similar goals with you and find out what they are doing compared to what you?re doing. You also might find that your goals are indeed not realistic, or that some other critical resource is needed before your goal can be realized.

Many times, stress is the thing that robs people of happiness. Stress in the mind hurts us both mentally and physically across our body. To retain clarity of mind and the motivation to work towards our goals, it is critical to banish unnecessary stress from our minds. Schedule some time every day simply to unwind. Just sit back, let your mind go blank, and think about what?s important to you. You can increase how good you feel about yourself and how at peace you feel by using this time to relax.

Taking steps to improve your health is a very important part of personal development. You need to not only eat right and exercise, but maintain the motivation to do these things day after day. If you feel healthy, then you will always be at the top of your game, which makes it easier to meet your other self improvement goals.

Everybody makes mistakes, and making healthy food choices is definitely one field in which mistakes get made. Don?t obsess over the minor details of life all the time as stress is no better for you than a piece of chocolate is.

It is essential to have a clearly outlined goal, when working toward improving self improvement. Therefore, state a goal for yourself that is detailed and specific. Having a specific goal will help you to get better results.

If you become angry, calm down and count up to ten before talking. Think peaceful thoughts and take a few deep breaths. Stay grounded and only say something you can live with tomorrow.

This article offers information on how you can better you personality, mental outlook and character to live a happier life. By using these tips as your guideline, you can begin your self improvement journey and place your best foot forward during your transition to a higher quality of life

Select one important part of yourself that you would like to improve, and focus on that. There may be several aspects of your life that you want to improve, but if you limit your attention to one thing at a time, your chance for success improves. This means you will be able to maintain the changes as you turn them into habits as habits take time to stick.

(AP) ? The mystery behind the most enigmatic smile in art ? Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" ? just got a little more complicated.

In a coming-out party of sorts in Geneva, rounds of flashbulbs popped Thursday as the nonprofit Mona Lisa Foundation pulled back the curtain to present what it claims is a predecessor of the world's most famous portrait.

But even the experts brought in by the foundation weren't sure about that claim just yet.

The art world is prone to all sorts of rumors and speculation ? and, periodically ? discoveries that jolt accepted norms. Two years ago, a retired French electrician claimed that he had turned up 271 Picasso works that had been sitting for decades in his garage ? and Picasso's heirs claimed theft.

But a new claim about the world's most famous painting, which draws millions of visitors to Paris' Louvre Museum each year, resonates like a thunderclap in the art world. It also prompts a new look at a painting that all by itself still raises a lot of questions for experts ? not least the timeless "Is she smiling or not?"

The "Isleworth Mona Lisa" features a dark-haired young woman with her arms crossed against a distant backdrop. The foundation insists it's no copy but an earlier version of the Louvre masterpiece.

At the presentation, Alessandro Vezzosi, director of the Museo Ideale Leonardo da Vinci, said the painting was intriguing but needs further study. He declined to line up behind the foundation's claims that it was truly a "Mona Lisa" predecessor painted by da Vinci.

"The Isleworth Mona Lisa is an important work of art deserving respect and strong consideration ? as well as a scientific, historic and artistic debate among specialists rather than a purely media interest," he said.

"Scientific tests don't demonstrate the authenticity (and) the autography of a painting, but demonstrate it's from a certain era, whether the techniques are similar or not," Vezzosi told The Associated Press in French. "Here, there are many open questions," before waving his hand over the painting, as a security guard with folded arms stood nearby.

Ever since the 16th century, several historical sources suggest that da Vinci painted two "Mona Lisa" versions. One was of Mona Lisa Gherardo around 1503 that was commissioned by her husband, Francesco del Giocondo, the foundation said. Another ? the one in the Louvre ? was completed in 1517 for Giuliano de Medici, da Vinci's patron. That theory fits with da Vinci's tendency at times to paint two versions of some of his works, like the Virgin of the Rocks, the group said.

Foundation members say it's unrealistic to think that the woman sat twice for a portrait, but that the meticulous, mathematical approach suggested that Da Vinci may have projected in his mind what she would have looked like between the first alleged "Mona Lisa" and the "Mona Lisa" in the Louvre.

However, the foundation acknowledged that the "Isleworth Mona Lisa" remains unfinished, and that da Vinci didn't paint all parts of the work. Still, the group pointed to newly discovered evidence in 2005 from Heidelberg, Germany, that suggested da Vinci was working on at least the head of such a painting in 1503.

The painting has been in headlines before, starting in the early 20th century. And it's not unknown to a foreign audience: It was shown in Japan last year before the foundation's research was finished.

Experts say Thursday's unveiling was designed to draw more attention and scrutiny from worldwide art experts about whether it's authentic: A start more than a finish.

The Isleworth painting first came to public light after British art collector Hugh Blaker found it in the home of a nobleman in Somerset, England before World War I, said Robert Meyrick, head of the art school at Wales' Aberystwyth University.

Blaker bought the painting and took it to his private studio in Isleworth outside London. U.S. and British newspapers, meanwhile, speculated even then that it might be a da Vinci. But at that time only art experts ? not high-tech science tests like the ones conducted by the foundation ? could judge its possible bona fides.

During World War I, Blaker shipped the painting to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts for safekeeping, the foundation said. In 1962, it was bought by U.S. collector Henry Pulitzer. When he died in 1979, his reported mistress ? Elisabeth Meyer ? inherited it, but it remained in a Swiss bank vault.

After she died, an "international consortium" ? which the foundation declined to identify ? bought the painting in 2008, according to the group's chronology. The foundation was set up two years later, determined to try to show that it was a real da Vinci.

The Mona Lisa Foundation's members are more from the business world than the art world. Participating in Thursday's show was David Feldman, an Irish-born stamp auctioneer; his brother Stanley, an art historian who was the main author of an extensive book on the "Isleworth Mona Lisa"; and Markus Frey, a lawyer in Zurich who is the foundation's president.

"It is the ultimate goal of our endeavors to give that stunning earlier version the place in art history which it deserves, after such a long period in obscurity," Frey said. "This great piece of art must finally be given to the public eye."

He said viewers can draw their own conclusions.

"Quite a few things we were taught in our early school years turned out to be incorrect, or were overturned by new discoveries or updated information," he said.

"The quintessence of any humanistic education is to ask questions, to be inquisitive, and to challenge authority. Of course, authority often sits in an ivory tower, which will no doubt be our biggest challenge."

The foundation and its backers paid "several million" to conduct research tests ? forensic analysis, carbon-dating and computerized regression analysis ? on the work, David Feldman said. He wouldn't say how much the painting was bought for in 2008.

Carlo Pedrotti, one of the world's most eminent scholars on da Vinci, hailed the foundation's "extraordinary contribution to scholarship."

In a letter to the foundation presented Thursday, Pedrotti called the group "precisely the sort of research institute, if not a veritable investigating agency ? an FBI for Leonardo studies! ? that I had always hoped for."

Martin Kemp, a da Vinci scholar and Oxford University professor, said he hadn't seen the painting but doubts that it is authentic. He cautioned that the foundation might have its judgment clouded by a possible payoff.

"If this were the original version of the most famous picture in the world, heaven knows what it would cost ? a lot of money," he told APTN in an interview at his home near Oxford. "You'd probably be on your way to 200 million pounds ($325 million) or to stratospheric realms."

"There are big, big stakes involved, and people become committed to it," he noted.

Still, who wouldn't want to have their own "Mona Lisa?"

"Having a Leonardo is a very sensational thing to have," Kemp admitted. "If I had a Leonardo, it would secure my fame forever."

Texas Instruments not leaving mobile after all

Android Central

There was some talk that Texas Instruments would be getting out of the mobile game a few days ago, but a TI rep has clarified the company's position just a bit. Mobile is still in the picture, but they're looking to make their products suitable for automotive, industrial, enterprise communication, vision, and robotics fields as well.

It's good to hear that TI isn't completely abandoning mobile, even if it means they won't be focusing on it in as specifically as before. I've seen some really impressive OMAP tech demos at TI's booth at the last two Mobile World Congress events, and it would be a shame to lose out on that innovation and see it head towards other sectors. On the other hand, with Samsung, Apple, Qualcomm, and Nvidia all in the mix, the smartphone and tablet processor market has become quite competitive.

OMAP 4 is still at the heart of Amazon tablets and a handful of other devices. Any big OMAP fans out there that are looking forward to version 5? Have you developed a preference for any particular type of processor?

Computers match humans in understanding art

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Understanding and evaluating art has widely been considered as a task meant for humans, until now. Computer scientists Lior Shamir and Jane Tarakhovsky of Lawrence Technological University in Michigan tackled the question "can machines understand art?" The results were very surprising. In fact, an algorithm has been developed that demonstrates computers are able to "understand" art in a fashion very similar to how art historians perform their analysis, mimicking the perception of expert art critiques.

In the experiment, published in the recent issue of ACM Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage, the researchers used approximately 1,000 paintings of 34 well-known artists, and let the computer algorithm analyze the similarity between them based solely on the visual content of the paintings, and without any human guidance. Surprisingly, the computer provided a network of similarities between painters that is largely in agreement with the perception of art historians.

The analysis showed that the computer was clearly able to identify the differences between classical realism and modern artistic styles, and automatically separated the painters into two groups, 18 classical painters and 16 modern painters. Inside these two broad groups the computer identified sub-groups of painters that were part of the same artistic movements. For instance, the computer automatically placed the High Renaissance artists Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Michelangelo very close to each other. The Baroque painters Vermeer, Rubens and Rembrandt were also clustered together by the algorithm, showing that the computer automatically identified that these painters share similar artistic styles.

The automatic computer analysis is in agreement with the view of art historians, who associate these three painters with the Baroque artistic movement. Similarly, the computer algorithm deduced that Gauguin and C?zanne, both considered post-impressionists, have similar artistic styles, and also identified similarities between the styles of Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Giorgio de Chirico, all are considered by art historians to be part of the surrealism school of art. Overall, the computer automatically produced an analysis that is in large agreement with the influential links between painters and artistic movements as defined by art historians and critiques.

While the average non-expert can normally make the broad differentiation between modern art and classical realism, they have difficulty telling the difference between closely related schools of art such as Early and High Renaissance or Mannerism and Romanticism. The experiment showed that machines can outperform untrained humans in the analysis of fine art.

The experiment was performed by computing from each painting 4,027 numerical image context descriptors -- numbers that reflect the content of the image such as texture, color and shapes in a quantitative fashion. This allows the computer to reflect very many aspects of the visual content, and use pattern recognition and statistical methods to detect complex patterns of similarities and dissimilarities between the artistic styles and then quantify these similarities.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will make his case against Iran before the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, arguing that time is quickly running out to stop the Islamic Republic from becoming a nuclear power and the threat of force must be seriously considered.

His demand that President Barack Obama declare "red lines" that would trigger an American attack on Iran's nuclear facilities has been rejected in Washington and sparked a public rift between the two leaders.

Netanyahu claims international diplomatic efforts and economic sanctions have failed. His time at the U.N. podium gives him an opportunity in front of the international community to press his case once again, perhaps in a final plea before Israel takes matters into its own hands. Israeli leaders have issued a series of warnings in recent weeks suggesting that if Iran's uranium enrichment program continues it may soon stage a unilateral military strike, flouting even American wishes.

The Obama administration has urgently sought to hold off Israeli military action, which would likely result in the U.S. being pulled into a conflict and cause regionwide mayhem on the eve of American elections.

Such an attack would almost certainly lead to retaliatory Iranian missile strikes on Israeli population centers. On Sunday, Iranian leaders suggested they may strike Israeli preemptively if they feel threatened.

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Iranian calls for Israel's destruction, Iran's development of missiles capable of striking the Jewish state and its support for hostile Arab militant groups.

Also Thursday, on the sidelines of the General Assembly, key figures will gather for a Friends of Yemen meeting that will be co-chaired by British Foreign Secretary William Hague, Yemen's President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and Saudi Arabia's Deputy Foreign Ministe Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Abdullah. The meeting will produce a communique aimed at generating support for Hadi, who took office in February after more than a year of political turmoil and is now trying to steer his country's democratic transition.

Later, political directors from the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany will be meeting on the Iranian nuclear issue.

A few hours before Netanyahu flew to the U.S., Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, known for past fiery denunciations of the United States and Israel, spoke at length about his vision for a "new world order" during his speech at the U.N. His speech on Wednesday happened to fall on Yom Kippur, the most sacred day on the Jewish calendar, devoted to fasting, prayer and introspection.

Netanyahu issued a statement condemning the speech soon after the fast ended. "On the day when we pray to be inscribed in the book of life a platform was given to a dictatorial regime that strives, at every opportunity, to sentence us to death," Netanyahu said. 'In my remarks to the UN General Assembly, they will hear my response. History has proven that those who have wanted to wipe us off the map have failed, as the Jewish People have overcome all obstacles," Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu has said he is going to the U.N. to draw attention to what Israel perceives as the Iranian threat. Speaking to his Cabinet on Sunday, he said at the U.N. he would "reiterate that the most dangerous country in the world must not be allowed to arm itself with the most dangerous weapon in the world." He did not elaborate.

On Tuesday, the Maariv daily reported that Netanyahu would present his own "red lines" to the world body. It said Netanyahu would spell out what limits the international community should set for Iran to prevent it from becoming a nuclear power and how long that will take. Netanyahu has never laid out these limits precisely.

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes but Israel, the U.S. and other Western allies reject the claim. Four rounds of U.N. sanctions have already been placed on Iran.

A U.N. report last month only reinforced Israeli fears, finding that Iran has moved more of its uranium enrichment activities into fortified bunkers deep underground where they are impervious to air attack. Enrichment is a key activity in building a bomb, though it has other uses as well, such as producing medical isotopes.

While Israel is convinced that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, American officials believe Iran has not yet made a final decision to take the plunge, even as it develops much of the infrastructure needed to do so.

Obama has repeatedly said he will not allow Iran to gain nuclear weapons and has said the U.S. would be prepared to use force as a last resort. But in an interview Sunday with "60 Minutes" he also vowed to "block out any noise that's out there" on the issue, in an apparent swipe at Netanyahu.

Israel's timeline for military action is shorter than that of the United States, which has far more powerful bunker-busting bombs at its disposal, and there is great suspicion in Israel over whether in the moment of truth Obama will follow through on his pledge.

Netanyahu has a history of fiery speeches at the U.N. General Assembly.

In 2009, he waved the blueprints for the Nazi death camp Aushwitz and invoked the memory of his own family members murdered by the Nazis while making his case against Iran's Holocaust denial and threats to destroy Israel.

To those who remained at the General Assembly while Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke, he chastised: "Have you no shame? Have you no decency?"

And last year, he warned the world about the threat of militant Islam and Iran.

During his three-day visit, Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper ? who recently expelled the Iranian ambassador from his country ? and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He is not scheduled to meet Obama.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is also set to speak in New York. The Palestinian leader is expected to ask the United Nation's General Assembly to vote on recognizing Palestine as an observer state in November.

Abbas has said he wants to put off a vote until after U.S. elections to avoid entangling the Palestinian statehood bid in presidential politics.

"I'm not in the U.N. to delegitimize Israel but to present the two state solution," Abbas told U.S. Jewish community leaders last week at a meeting by the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace. "I want to have Palestine as a nonmember state." said.

Abbas' relatively low-key approach is in contrast to last year when he was at center stage with his attempt to win full membership in the world body. That application failed to win enough support in the Security Council.

Large 2012 earthquake triggered temblors worldwide for nearly a week

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? This year's largest earthquake, a magnitude 8.6 temblor on April 11 centered in the East Indian Ocean off Sumatra, did little damage, but it triggered quakes around the world for at least a week, according to a new analysis by seismologists from the University of California, Berkeley, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The April 11 quake was unusually large -- the tenth largest in the last 100 years and, similar to a few other recent large quakes, triggered small quakes during the three hours it took for seismic waves to travel through Earth's crust.

The new study shows, however, that some faults weren't rattled enough by the seismic waves to fail immediately, but were primed to break up to six days later.

The findings are a warning to those living in seismically active regions worldwide that the risk from a large earthquake could persist -- even on the opposite side of the globe -- for more than a few hours, the experts said.

"Until now, we seismologists have always said, 'Don't worry about distant earthquakes triggering local quakes,'" said Roland Burgmann, professor of earth and planetary science at UC Berkeley and coauthor of the study. "This study now says that, while it is very rare -- it may only happen every few decades -- it is a real possibility if the right kind of earthquake happens."

"We found a lot of big events around the world, including a 7.0 quake in Baja California and quakes in Indonesia and Japan, that created significant local shaking," Burgmann added. "If those quakes had been in an urban area, it could potentially have been disastrous."

Burgmann and Fred F. Pollitz, Ross S. Stein and Volkan Sevilgen of the USGS will report their results online on Sept. 26 in advance of publication in the journal Nature.

Burgmann, Pollitz, a research seismologist, and their colleagues also analyzed earthquake occurrences after five other recent temblors larger than 8.5 -- including the deadly 9.2 Sumatra-Andaman quake in 2004 and the 9.0 Tohoku quake that killed thousands in Japan in 2011 -- but saw only a very modest increase in global earthquake activity after these quakes. They said this could be because the East Indian Ocean quake was a "strike-slip" quake that more effectively generates waves, called Love waves, that travel just under the surface and are energetic enough to affect distant fault zones.

Burgmann explained that most large quakes take place at subduction zones, where the ocean bottom sinks below another tectonic plate. This was the origin of the Sumatra-Andaman quake, which produced a record tsunami that took more than 200,000 lives. The 2012 East Indian Ocean quake involved lateral movement -- referred to as strike-slip, the same type of movement that occurs along California's San Andreas Fault -- and was the largest strike-slip quake ever recorded.

"This was one of the weirdest earthquakes we have ever seen," Burgmann said. "It was like the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a strike-slip event, but it was huge -- 15 times more energetic. This earthquake and an 8.3 that followed were in a very diffuse zone in an oceanic plate close to the Sumatra subduction zone, but it wasn't a single fault that produced the quake, it was a crisscrossing of three or four faults that all ruptured in sequence to make such a big earthquake, and they ruptured deep."

The seismologists analysis found five times the expected number of quakes during the six days following the April 11 quake and aftershock. An unusually low occurrence of quakes during the 6-12 days before that 8.6 quake may have accentuated the impact, possibly because there were many very-close-to-failure faults sensitive to a triggering shock wave, Pollitz said.

One possible mechanism for the delayed action, Burgmann said, is that the East Indian Ocean quake triggered a cascade of smaller, undetectable quakes on these faults that led to larger ruptures later on.

Alternatively, large quakes could trigger nearly undetectable tremors or microquakes that are a sign of slow slip underground.

"One possibility is that the earthquake immediately triggers slow slip in some places, maybe accompanied by detectable tremor, and then that runs away into a bigger earthquake," Burgmann speculated. "Some slow slip events take days to a week or more to evolve."

The work was supported by the USGS.

Stocks lower at midday as European shares tumble

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK --?Stocks are lower at midday as unrest simmers in Europe.?

Just before noon on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average is off 27 points at 13,430. the Standard & Poor's 500 index is down eight at 1,434. And the Nasdaq composite index is down 29 at 3,089.?

European stocks are having their worst day in months as unrest threatens to boil over in Greece, where deep budget cuts have eroded people's living standards, and in Spain.?

In the U.S., the median price of new homes sold in August rose by a record amount, while sales of new homes dipped slightly.

Stronger data on the U.S. housing market have helped insulate stocks in recent weeks from fears about the global economy. Stocks' other main source of support, the Federal Reserve's program to boost the economy by pumping money in, lost some luster Tuesday after a key Fed official expressed skepticism about the plan.?

"There was some optimism coming into the market, and that's usually when you're most vulnerable to sell-offs when there are negative headlines" like the Fed official's comments, unrest in Europe and weaker data about the U.S. economy, said Todd Salamone, director of research at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

Indexes had risen to levels they hadn't beat for months or years, Salamone said, creating "an almost perfect storm in terms of the vulnerability to short-term impacts.'

The dip in home sales hurt homebuilder stocks. PulteGroup Inc. fell 5.5 percent, KB Home 5.4 percent and Beazer Homes USA Inc. 4.7 percent.

European stocks were having their worst day in months as unrest threatened to boil over in Greece, where deep budget cuts have eroded people's living standards, and Spain, where citizens are resisting a likely bailout from international lenders. Earlier, Asian stocks closed lower.

The euro fell sharply against the dollar, and the price of oil dropped below $90 per barrel for the first time since early August.

Rising demand for lower-risk investments fed strong bids for U.S. Treasury debt. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.63 percent from 1.67 percent late Tuesday. A bond's yield falls as its price increases.

The moves come a day after the worst sell-off for the S&P 500 in three months. Charles Plosser, president of the Fed's Philadelphia branch, told an audience Tuesday that the Fed's effort to support the economy would likely fall short of its goals.

Stocks had rallied this summer before and after the Fed announced the plan to buy $40 billion in mortgage bonds each month until the economy strengthens. As doubts about it sink in, stocks are falling back to where they were when the deal was announced.

Below, Katie Stockton of MKM Partners provides discusses buying opportunities in the markets on CNBC.
