Norcross: 1916 football, Ray Lewis, Aztecs and more

A panel of U-T San Diego sports writers, plus former Tribune writer and prep historian Rick Smith, have selected an All-Time San Diego Section Football Team.

The team will be unveiled in the Sunday, Feb. 10 edition of the newspaper. In all, the panel selected a first, second and third team, 93 players in all.

The school with the most players selected: San Diego High, with 17. The player who dates back the farthest: Pesky Sprott, who played at San Diego High in 1916.

Old-timers Nick Canepa, Bill Center and Smith pushed hard for Sprott.

?I think his name Pesky had a lot to do with it,? said another panelist, John Maffei. ?Had his name been Frank, he might have not made it.?

Sprott and more

Actually, Sprott?s credentials seem impeccable. According to the San Diego Hall of Champions, Albert ?Pesky? Sprott was one of seven San Diego High alums who played on Cal?s 1920 ?Wonder Team.?

The 1920 Golden Bears finished 9-0, including a 28-0 rout of Ohio State in the ?21 Rose Bowl. Sprott scored two touchdowns in the game, but it was a Cavers teammate who earned MVP honors: quarterback Harold ?Brick? Muller. ?

The 1920 Bears became the first West Coast team named as national champions. ? Cal was unbeaten from 1920 to ?25, posting a 46-0-4 record ?

By Tuesday, This Just In was suffering from Super Bowl XLVII burnout. Don?t care about Ray Lewis? preaching, pending retirement or if he used deer antler spray ?

Tired of the John and Jim Harbaugh angle. Now if you can track down the old man, Jack, who was an assistant coach under Jim at USD, get him telling yarns about the boys, that I?d be interested in reading ?

Until then, wake me up at 3:30 Sunday for the kickoff ?

Did you know? You can bet on the length of the Jim/John postgame handshake ?

U-T headline: Aztecs to receive visit from five-star recruit; reaction: the five-star recruit, linebacker Reuben Foster, is from Auburn, Ala., and sports an Auburn tattoo on his forearm. Can?t blame the kid for vacationing in San Diego ?

Foster has commitment issues. He said he?d attend Auburn, but after the Tigers? brutal 3-9 season (0-8 in the SEC) and the firing of head coach Gene Chizik, Foster de-committed ? As for the tattoo, the ink remains ?

Former Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward, who retired after the 2011 season, will race at Ironman Hawaii in October as part of a promotion for REFUEL / Got Chocolate Milk ?

Ward will be in good care when it comes to preparation. His trainer: eight-time Ironman Hawaii champion Paula Newby-Fraser of Encinitas ?

Waste Management passes valuable tips on living green at your Super Bowl party. One suggestion pertains to pizza. ?After enjoying your favorite pie, recycle clean pizza boxes.?

One problem, says U-T military writer Jen Steele: ?If the box is clean, rather than dripping with tomato sauce, veggies and pepperoni stains, how good was the pizza??

H.S. FOOTBALL: Valley View's Mengoni, Wyoming Area's O'Brien and Scranton coach Marichak named to PSFCA all-star team

A pair of players and a coach from District 2 will be part of a postseason high school football all-star game.

Valley View center Anthony Mengoni, Wyoming Area running back Nick O'Brien and Scranton coach Mike Marichak will be a part of the East all-star team when it plays the West all-stars in the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association game scheduled for May 5 at Downingtown West High School.

For Mengoni, it's been a rewarding couple of weeks as he recently committed to accept a football scholarship to Delaware State.

A three-year starter for the Cougars, the 6-foot-2, 265-pound Mengoni helped pave the way for the Cougars offense that averaged 320.5 yards per game and 247.5 yards on the ground last season. He also stood out on defense and was chosen to the LFC Division I coaches' all-star second-team as a defensive lineman.

"It's awesome, especially after all of the hard work I put in," Mengoni said. "First the scholarship and now this. It's just unbelievable. It's nice to have an opportunity to represent Valley View and it's an honor to be chosen.

"It's going to be awesome to suit up again before I have to go to college."

At Wyoming Area, O'Brien proved to be one of the top players in the history of the Wyoming Valley Conference.

This past season, he led the team to the District 2 Class AA championship with 1,853 yards and 29 touchdowns, he passed for 11 touchdowns and returned three punts for scores.

He finished his career with 5,036 yards rushing to rank third all-time in the WVC.

Marichak will assist Downington East coach Mike Matta. This season, Marichak guided Scranton to a 10-0 regular season, the Lackawanna Football Conference Division I championship and an 11-1 overall record.

"It's a great honor to be able to coach a great group of all-stars from Pennsylvania," Marichak said. "There are some top-notch athletes who will be playing and I am excited about the opportunity."

App Store brought in 3.5 times more revenue than Google Play in 2012

App Store brought in 3.5 times more revenue than Google Play in 2012

App Annie, a service that tracks revenue and growth for both the App Store and Google Play, has released their January 2013 index. Both marketplaces are doing very well and while Google Play saw more growth than the App Store, the App Store still managed to bring in over 3 times more than Google Play.

When comparing both app ecosystems, Google Play has grown tremendously with over 700,000 apps now available to consumers compared to the App Store's 800,000, according to App Annie and Bloomberg.

App Annie wouldn?t disclose specific revenue figures because it sells that information separately to software companies that buy the data and analytics. While Apple has said the App Store has generated more than $7 billion since 2008, Google hasn?t made such information public. Apple has more than 800,000 apps on its store, and Google has more than 700,000.

Apple has reported to average around $333 million a month since June to December, which is over 3 times more than Google Play. Apple also saw an increase in sales of around 20% between October and December which can probably be attributed to the release of the iPhone 5 and iPad mini.

What's interesting though is that Google Play has grown 6 times its size prior to 2012, even though Apple still pulled in higher revenue. Apple's App Store has been around a lot longer than Google Play and has a very established user base but it shows that both ecosystems are doing remarkably well as coming into a brand new year.

Senate panel approves Kerry nomination

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday swiftly and unanimously approved President Barack Obama's choice of Sen. John Kerry to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state.

By voice vote, the panel approved the nomination of the five-term Massachusetts Democrat, who has been a member of the committee for 28 years and led it for the past four. The full Senate planned to vote Tuesday afternoon.

Kerry did not attend the session in the ornate diplomatic room in the Capitol. In his absence, Democrats and Republicans praised him and remarked on his extensive grasp of the issues during his confirmation hearing last Thursday.

"Long-winded," joked Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a Kerry friend who had introduced the senator at that hearing.

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., who succeeds Kerry as committee chairman, said the senator would be a "formidable secretary of state."

Obama chose Kerry, 69, the son of a diplomat, decorated Vietnam veteran and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, to succeed Clinton, who is stepping down after four years. The senator had pined for the top diplomatic job that went to Clinton after Obama's 2008 election.

Kerry has served as Obama's unofficial envoy, soothing relations with leaders in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The ease with which the Senate is acting on Kerry's nomination is certain to disappear with Obama's two other national security nominees ? former Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Republican nominated for defense secretary, and John Brennan, Obama's pick for CIA director.

Hagel faces strong opposition from some of his former GOP colleagues who question his support for reductions in the nuclear arsenal and cuts in defense spending. Lawmakers also have questioned whether he is sufficiently supportive of Israel and strongly opposed to any outreach to Iran.

Democrats have rallied for Hagel, and he has the announced support of at least a dozen members in advance of his confirmation hearing on Thursday. Six Republicans have said they would vote against him, with some opposing Obama's choice even before the president's announcement.

Brennan faces questions from the GOP about White House leaks of classified information and from Democrats about the administration's use of drones.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., threatened to block the nomination of both men until he gets more answers from the Obama administration about the deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Graham, who earlier this month signaled he would delay Brennan's pick, said in an interview Monday night with Fox News' "On the Record" the he would "absolutely" block Hagel unless Defense Secretary Leon Panetta testifies about the attack in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton testified for more than five hours last Wednesday before the House and Senate, but that wasn't sufficient for Graham.

"Hillary Clinton got away with murder, in my view," he said. "She said they had a clear-eyed view of the threats. How could you have a clear-eyed of the threats in Benghazi when you didn't know about the ambassador's cable coming back from Libya?"

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., told reporters Tuesday that a hearing with Panetta on Libya is planned though the date was uncertain. Graham welcomed that news and said he would not thwart a committee vote on the nomination.

"Happy as a clam, news to me," he said.

As a White House emissary, Kerry has tamped down diplomatic fires for Obama. He also has stepped ahead of the administration on a handful of crises. He joined McCain as an early proponent of a more aggressive policy toward Libya, pushing for using military forces to impose a "no-fly zone" over Libya as Moammar Gadhafi's forces killed rebels and citizens.

He was one of the early voices calling for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down as the revolution roiled the nation two years ago.

During his tenure, Kerry has pushed for reducing the number of nuclear weapons, shepherding a U.S.-Russia treaty through the Senate in December 2010, and has cast climate change as a national security threat, joining forces with Republicans on legislation that faced too many obstacles to win congressional passage.

He has led delegations to Syria and met a few times with President Bashar Assad, now a pariah in U.S. eyes after months of civil war and bloodshed as the government looks to put down a people's rebellion. Figuring out an end-game for the Middle East country would demand all of Kerry's skills.

The selection of Kerry closes a political circle with Obama. In 2004, it was White House hopeful Kerry who asked a largely unknown Illinois state senator to deliver the keynote address at the Democratic convention in Boston, handing the national stage to Obama. Kerry lost that election to President George W. Bush. Four years later, Obama was the White House hopeful who succeeded where Kerry had failed.

Kerry would be the first man to fill the secretary of state job since Colin Powell eight years ago. Condoleezza Rice served as secretary of state in President George W. Bush's second term, and Clinton has held the post in Obama's first term.

Obama's gun plan begins slow, scrutinized trek through Congress

By Michael O'Brien, Political Reporter, NBC News

The Obama administration?s gun violence proposals are beginning their arduous path through Congress, as the opening act moves to the Senate Wednesday and?lawmakers begin to pick apart some of the plan?s most ambitious gun control measures.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., on?Tuesday vowed?to bring up some version of President Barack Obama?s comprehensive gun violence proposal for a vote on the Senate floor when it is ready. But he said Republicans would also be free to offer amendments to the bill, which could lengthen the legislative process and strip stricter gun control measures of their teeth.

?It's very clear that there's going to be a bill brought out of the committee, brought to the Senate floor, and there will be an amendment process there, the people bringing up whatever amendments they want that deals with this issue,? Reid told reporters Tuesday on Capitol Hill.

Alex Wong / Getty Images

Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid speaks to members of the press after the weekly Senate Democratic Policy Luncheon at the U.S. Capitol January 29, 2013.

The Nevada Democrat?s comments come as Congress begins the challenging process toward approving its first major piece of gun legislation since the 1990s.

The Senate Judiciary Committee holds its first hearings that topic on Wednesday, featuring high-profile witnesses on either side of that issue. Speaking in favor of gun control will be retired astronaut Mark Kelly, the husband of Gabrielle Giffords, the former Arizona congresswoman injured critically in a 2011 shooting.

On the other side will be National Rifle?Association CEO?Wayne LaPierre, whose influential gun rights lobby is working to thwart the administration?s proposals on Capitol Hill. According to LaPierre?s prepared testimony, released Tuesday by the NRA, he will stake out a clear stance against the heart of the president's plan.

?When it comes to the issue of background checks, let?s be honest ? background checks will never be ?universal? ? because criminals will never submit to them,? said LaPierre in those prepared remarks.

LaPierre's testimony on Wednesday will surely reflect the sharp opposition to the Obama plan among gun rights groups; aversion that threatens to transform the battle into a legislative slog and sap the administration?s momentum.

Skepticism over assault weapons ban
While the outrage prompted by the December rampage at Sandy Hook elementary school has lingered longer than previous mass shootings, the impetus for gun control measures threatens to fade as time passes.

Already, one of the central proposals from Obama?s plan ? renewing the ban on assault weapons ? faces an uphill battle to be included in any final legislation.?

The New Republic's Chris Hughes and Frank Foer join Morning Joe to discuss the publication's relaunch which features a wide-ranging interview with President Barack Obama.

Reid, who has said he would not seek Senate passage of legislation that had no chance of approval in the House, was non-committal on the issue of the assault weapons ban during his comments on Tuesday.?

?I'll take a look at that,? he said of a proposed ban on assault weapons favored by California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

?As I've indicated to you folks, we're going to have votes on all kinds of issues dealing with guns. And I think everyone will be well advised to read the legislation before they determine how they're going to vote for it.?

Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, has said that the House would consider whatever legislation on guns the Senate manages to pass, but has committed to little more than that.?

And, in fact, whatever legislation the Republican-controlled House is able to consider might depend ultimately on a handful of moderate Senate Democrats.

Several of those lawmakers have expressed skepticism toward the assault weapons ban, but have conveyed more interest in universal background checks ? the element of Obama?s plan that gun control proponents that might have a better chance at passage.?

That provision appears poised even to win some Republican support: Oklahoma Republican Sen. Tom Coburn told a Tulsa television station on Friday that he?s working with Democrats on legislation to ensure universal background checks.?

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was more reluctant to endorse such a measure, saying during an availability at the Capitol on Tuesday: ?I'm among those who'd be happy to take a look at whatever the majority decides to advance on that subject.??

But Paul Ryan, the Wisconsin congressman who frequently mentioned his pride as a hunter during his time as Mitt Romney?s running mate appeared to lend support to that idea during a Sunday interview on ?Meet the Press.??

?I think the question of whether or not a criminal is getting a gun is a question we need to look at. That's what the background check issue's all about,? he said. ?And I think we need to look into making sure that there aren't big loopholes where a person can illegally purchase a firearm.?

Mayor Coleman Plays Bartender for St. Paul

The Twin Cities have some pretty awesome mayors. First, we have Rybak, who crowd surfs and declares Doomtree Day, then, we have St. Paul?s Chris Coleman playing bartender for a day to take away his constituents? mid-week blues. When, you ask? Tonight!

As if you Minneapolitans needed another reason to hop over to the other side of the river, there are some deliciously nonpartisan bar happenings this evening. Mayor Coleman will be pouring drinks at several St. Paul pubs tonight, starting with Bullpen Sports Saloon and Ward 6 before ending the night at the just-off-of-Snelling-standby,?Neighborhood Cafe, which now serves wine and beer. Coleman will begin his ?shift? at 5 p.m. tonight at Bullpen, just in time for happy hour, before continuing on to the other two locations. We?re most curious to see if Coleman will indulge in anything himself?perhaps one of Ward 6?s new ?Adult Milkshakes? or the cleverly-coined ?Don Draper Says ?What??cocktail . . .

Sensors Log an Athlete's Every Move—And Heartbeat

Dogging it while the coach looks the other way isn't an option for elite-level athletes. Coach is always watching. And now, in addition to all-seeing video cameras, he has indoor GPS to track every player's location, speed, and other factors with pinpoint accuracy during every second of a practice or game.

Catapult Sports, based in Melbourne, Australia, already has its wearable GPS and data-tracking devices strapped to the backs of athletes in the NBA, the NFL, soccer's English Premier League, and even Australian Rules Football. Soon the company will roll out its indoor GPS system upgrade, which will supplement the devices' movement-tracking feature by providing information on acceleration/deceleration, how much force a player exerts, velocity, and more. Add in a new sensor embedded in the ball, and coaches and trainers will have real-time data for each specific athlete and the ball itself. Ever want to know much force LeBron James uses to make a crosscourt pass? Science can tell you instantly.

"For your average strength and conditioning coach looking at speed, heart rate, and distance, the (regular) GPS is an adequate solution," Catapult co-founder Igor van de Griendt tells PM from Melbourne. "The indoor GPS really allows the club to take it to the next level, where it has a lot of value on the technical side to see positions relative to opponents or the shape of an offense and defense."

As PM noted at the Consumer Electronics Show, indoor GPS is the next big thing in navigation. But the name is a misnomer. While the typical global positioning system relies on satellites, indoor GPS relies on a network of nodes communicating with the tracking device. Catapult arranges 6.2 x 3.7?inch nodes around a stadium, providing a continuously talking network of 10 to 20 sensors depending on the size and shape of the venue. Radio waves bounce off the mobile nodes worn by players and the fixed-position nodes at high rates of speed, and smart algorithms help crunch the data and allow coaches to view the positioning of a player to within 15 centimeters of accuracy. Catapult has agreements with various ball manufacturers to insert patented technology, weighing just 0.5 ounces, into the ball at the manufacturing stage. The sensors must be robust?balls get hit, thrown, kicked, and bounced, after all?and safely tucked inside the ball without changing its characteristics.

Catapult can set up most systems in just a couple of hours. The system uses ultrafast GPS, at 15 Hz, although Catapult suggests a rate of 10 Hz for most team sports. Indoors, this eliminates the need for using multiple cameras to triangulate player speeds, the only way other than indoor GPS to get this data.

While still monitoring all individual-player metrics, the indoor GPS system also grants coaches a better overall understanding of the entire team and their relation to each other and to their opponents. How the coach wants to use it is up to them, whether tweaking plays, redefining positions or working players into different roles based on speed and positioning.

With so little difference between elite athletes, coaches are all looking for that little gold nugget in the data. "Are they lazy? Can we get them to work harder? Those are the things they get excited about," van de Griendt says. "It is the ability to measure things and put their own spin on it."

James Hanisch, a sports scientist with the University of Oregon, who previously worked in Australian Rules Football, says the tactical applications of the indoor GPS will give him even better data on the movements of the body. For example, he wants to know how much force a lineman exerts on a particular snap and in relation to specific plays. Does the lineman work harder on running plays or passing plays? How much does he wear down over the course of a game? Now Hanisch can measure that.

"We are looking at it over time," he says. "It is really about getting a grasp on what each player is doing and coming up with a baseline. Then, how do we push him to reach peak performance, or, if the medical staff is saying these guys are at risk of injury, how do we minimize that?"

The Seattle Sounders of MLS have begun using the equipment to keep better tabs on whether players in certain positions are overworked, fitness coach David Tenney says. "In 2007 we were just using heart-rate-type technology and we found that it was at times giving us a false sense of where guys were," he says. "Catapult is ... a training monitoring system. That is how we are using it."

For years now coaches have been able to track how far a player runs during a game. But by combining that knowledge with biosignatures time-stamped to any point in the game, coaches can understand how hard they are working each player and how the different positions on the field compare with one another. That information has allowed coaches to make changes in training based on the data, Tenney says.

"By looking at some of the data we get out, we can prevent muscle-type injuries," van de Griendt says. "Sensors can measure impacts and spin rates and measure the actual force or amount of tackles and force and correlate those with injuries."

Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid has bought into the system, which means the players are onboard, too, even if that means wearing the 3.5-ounce device. And, all along the way, coaches and trainers get to watch. No more loafing.

Los Angeles official seeks to shut hotels for maternity tourists

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles official moved on Tuesday to crack down on so-called maternity hotels he said have sprung up across parts of Southern California as pregnant women travel to the United States in a growing "birthing tourism" trend.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe asked colleagues to approve a series of steps designed to ultimately close the hotels - typically single-family homes carved into bedrooms where visiting women pay to stay in anticipation of giving birth to a child who will be born a U.S. citizen.

"His intent here with this motion is not to regulate these maternity hotels, it's to eliminate them," Knabe's spokeswoman, Cheryl Burnett, said following a Board of Supervisors meeting.

"These are really underground money-making schemes that attract women to the U.S. to have their babies," she said.

The issue of maternity tourism bubbled to the surface in recent months when residents of an upscale Los Angeles suburb protested against what they said was a maternity hotel operating in their neighborhood to host pregnant women from China. They complained it caused sanitation and other issues.

The U.S. Constitution grants citizenship to any child born on U.S. soil, regardless of parentage, and immigration experts said there was nothing inherently illegal about women coming from abroad to give birth to children in the country.

Burnett said that Knabe's action was directed at zoning and health and safety issues associated with the hotels, noting that county officials have no jurisdiction over immigration laws. She said U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement would be asked to determine how the women were entering the country.

Burnett said the board of supervisors was expected to approve the motion next week, directing a number of county agencies to investigate the hotels. It also orders the county counsel to draft zoning ordinances that would put them out of business in Los Angeles County.

NEIGHBOR COMPLAINTS

Last month residents in an upscale neighborhood of Chino Hills protested a large hilltop home that was found to have been divided up into 17 bedrooms and 17 bathrooms.

The Los Angeles Times quoted Chino Hills officials as saying in a December court filing that 10 women from China and their babies were staying in rooms of the home, which did not have permits to operate as a business.

Neighbors had complained of a sewage spill from an overloaded septic system and cars speeding in and out of the driveway. An inspection found exposed wiring, missing smoke alarms and holes in bedroom floors - as well as brochures on how to have a U.S. citizen baby, according to the Times.

Since then the county has received some 65 complaints about maternity homes operating in the county's San Gabriel Valley, home to a large Asian population.

A report commissioned by the county board of supervisors in December said zoning enforcement agents had investigated 20 such illegal maternity hotels that it described as part of a mushrooming "birthing tourism" trend.

"This trend seems to be expanding in Southern California (particularly in Los Angeles counties) as well as New York City and Vancouver, Canada," the report said.

Southern California immigration activists suggested the issue was being blown out of proportion, saying it may have been stoked by an ongoing national debate over illegal immigration.

"If you've got a home and it's unsafe for one reason or another, you certainly want a public safety interaction making the place safer," said Manuel Pastor, a professor of sociology at the University of Southern California.

"But this is playing out against the terrain of pretty heated immigration politics that's likely to get even more heated in next few months," Pastor said.

In October, a pregnant woman who was arrested trying to cross from Mexico into California with a fake identification documents to deliver her baby in Los Angeles made headlines when she told customs agents that she was the daughter of Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

The woman, Alejandrina Gisselle Guzman-Salazar, pleaded guilty in December to using a false passport and was deported to Mexico before she could give birth.

The event will be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel Feb 23 in association with Rivaage Boutique.

"I work in an industry where women are revered and respected. I have had the privilege of dressing some of the most beautiful and powerful women in the world, but when I step out of the door and into the stark reality of the streets, I see the injustice and inequality all around me," Malhotra said in a statement.

The designer has dressed celebrities like Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif.

"Without women, I wouldn`t be where I am today and so I want to give what I can back to an organisation like Angeli that celebrates womanhood," added the designer, who also works closely with Indian actress Shabana Azmi`s NGO Mijwan Welfare Society.

Proceeds from the ticket sales of the Gala Fundraiser will go to two specific projects run by the Angeli Foundation - the Gayatri Education Programme, which provides girl students with the skills they need to succeed, and Mobile Medical Clinics, which visit girls` schools and provide health checks on a regular basis.

WADA calls UCI 'deceitful' in doping probe

LONDON (AP) ? The World Anti-Doping Agency called the UCI "deceitful" Tuesday for shutting down its independent doping panel and said it won't participate in an amnesty commission set up by the cycling governing body.

WADA said the UCI has "again chosen to ignore its responsibility to the sport" by disbanding the panel looking into claims that cycling leaders helped cover up Lance Armstrong's suspicious doping tests and accepted $125,000 from him in donations.

Instead, the UCI announced Monday plans to set up a separate amnesty-style "truth and reconciliation commission" that it claimed was supported by WADA President John Fahey.

"This is not only wrong in content and process, but again deceitful," WADA said in a statement. "The fact is that WADA was awaiting a reply to the correspondence when the UCI release was delivered.

"WADA has not and will not consider partaking in any venture with UCI while this unilateral and arrogant attitude continues."

The anti-doping agency added that it will not "pay for or contribute to any collaborative effort with UCI into investigating UCI's long-standing problems with doping in its sport and its alleged complicity."

Accusations against the UCI emerged in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report that detailed doping and led to Armstrong being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles. Armstrong recently confessed to doping after years of denials.

In justifying the reason to disband the independent panel, the UCI cited WADA's refusal to cooperate with the inquiry.

But WADA on Tuesday said it would not participate because of the "inadequacies of the terms of reference and the timelines." It also didn't want the UCI to scrutinize or edit the findings before they were released.

WADA said it hopes the UCI's independent commission will still meet as previously planned on Thursday, despite being disbanded. The three-person body said Tuesday the UCI never provided the cooperation ? promised by UCI President Pat McQuaid ? to allow it to function.

"This failure to cooperate makes our task impossible," the commission, which was chaired by British judge Philip Otton, said in a statement. "Therefore, the proposed hearing on (Jan. 31) will not take place."

City of the Month: Park City, UT ? Travel Smart Blog

Last week, the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival honored the top independent movies and players. Every year, its host, Park City, Utah, takes the best supporting role for the annual celeb-studded event.

Park City is topping all the travel lists (Forbes, Travel + Leisure, Ski Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler) lately surpassing destinations such as Aspen. Why? Accessibility, creativity, and activity!

Park City is a transformed old mining town with three ski resorts surrounding it. The quaintness of Park City?s Main Street is a thin veil for souvenirs and high-end retail. And don?t be deceived by the quaint fa?ade as the price tag for a vacation in and around this city is never bargain-priced. The four block historic strip is perfect for strolling or you can step into Robert Redford?s restaurant, Zoom, which offers some delicious local fare.

Accessibility

Nobody wants to spend the better part of a day traveling into a destination. Park City is more accessible than many of the top ski resort towns ? located only 45 minutes from The Salt Lake City airport. The international airport serves many airlines; Delta Air Lines has nonstop flights from more than 100 cities. Shuttles are a better choice than renting a car.

Hotels in Park City are numerous; from the big brand hotels to the local lodges.

Creativity

It has become a hub of culinary creativity with more than 100 restaurants and some truly inspired eateries.

If dining among celebrities in a beautiful mountain setting sounds appealing, you?ll want to check-in to the Waldorf-Astoria. Get a table at Slopes, a new restaurant deemed America?s hottest hotel restaurant in 2012 by Travel & Leisure.

The Waldorf-Astoria?s renowned bar and lounge, Powder Ice Lounge, features a 14-foot sculpted ice bar (it?s literally made of ice) and is one of the most popular photo-ops in the city.

Activity

Park City features three world-class resorts ? Deer Valley Resort, Canyons Resort and Park City Mountain Resort ? that offer three seasons of fun for everyone. (I say three because spring is a transitional season when the resorts close, the snow melts, and the preparations for the summer season are taking place.)

In the winter, the powder is abundant. Park City is home to the steep mountains where the US Ski Team trains attracting the world?s top snow sport enthusiasts, and a very chic and sophisticated crowd.

The Utah Olympic Park near Park City was the site of the 2002 Bobsled, Luge and Ski Jumping competitions. Today, visitors are treated to a guided tour of the park, athlete training sessions, 70 mile-per-hour bobsled rides, zipline rides, Quicksilver alpine slide rides, Olympic museum, an interactive museum, freestyle aerial and ski jumping shows on Saturdays at noon and a variety of camps for all ages.

In the summer and fall, the resorts convert their lifts and runs into over 400 miles of trails for biking and hiking and endless activities. Deer Valley?s Mountain Biking School offers lessons for those looking to improve their skills or just a guide for some of the areas best trails.

US firms encouraged by bipartisan immigration reform

From agricultural firms to high-tech companies, US employers are eager to see the broken immigration system fixed. But without details fixed, firms are cautious with support.?

By Lisa Baertlein and Sarah McBride,?Reuters / January 28, 2013

Rep. Joe Garcia (D) of Florida states his support for immigrants and pledges to work in favor of immigration reform in downtown Miami, Monday, Jan. 28, 2013. A broad slate of US companies are also encouraged by a bipartisan plan in Congress that would reform the immigration system.

The first big political push for an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws in more than five years holds out some promise for employers who have long complained that the current system is broken and inhibits hiring.

From farmers who cannot find Americans to pick their crops to technology firms who need more engineers from abroad, the bipartisan plan from eight U.S. senators announced on Monday offered solutions like a "workable" program for seasonal farm labor and a commitment to "attracting and keeping the world's best and brightest."

"We are encouraged by the momentum on these important issues," said Microsoft general counsel and executive vice president Brad Smith.

Companies and business groups of all stripes have come out in favor of immigration reform, hoping to tap the immigrant labor force that has long been a key to growth of the U.S. economy.

But Smith said Microsoft needs to see the details of the legislation, which has not yet been crafted, and that it hopes the reform will expand the so-called H-1B visa system for highly skilled workers.

The government now offers a quota of 65,000 H-1B visas per year, a number unusually met in a few weeks of applications and far fewer than the U.S. technology sector says it needs to innovate and remain competitive.

The eight senators said that any immigrant who receives an advanced degree in the United States in science, technology, engineering or math (collectively known as STEM), should be given a green card, shorthand for legal residence and work permit.

"It makes no sense to educate the world's future innovators and entrepreneurs only to ultimately force them to leave our country at the moment they are most able to contribute to our economy," the senators said.

The proposal from the senators, who include Arizona Republican John McCain and New York Democrat Charles Schumer, goes so far as to offer a path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants. Schumer said he hoped a bill would pass Congress as early as mid-year.

But it also offers provisions to make legal immigration more efficient and to bolster an employment verification system to help companies know if they are hiring illegal migrants.

While the U.S. government's "E-Verify" program is now only required in some states, a mandatory beefed-up system that takes the burden off companies for detecting fraud in identity documents and places it on the government might be welcomed.

A one-step process in which the employer enters data and awaits a government approval "could be a very effective system," said Eleanor Pelta, head of immigration law at the Washington law firm Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.

Several high-profile companies, including burrito chain Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc, have been investigated after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) audits turned up problems with their employment paperwork. ICE started investigations at nearly 4,000 workplaces in fiscal 2012.

Chipotle moved to E-Verify almost two years ago after ICE audits revealed it had hired hundreds of illegal immigrants. Company spokesman Chris Arnold said that mandating a similar system would be "pretty much moot" for the 1,300-restaurant company.

While passage of the proposal into law is far from assured, farm organizations may have most reason to be encouraged, given its emphasis on meeting the needs of the agriculture industry.

"I see this absolutely as our best opportunity that we've had in a generation to get ... a solution to our immigration problems," said Charles Conner, president and CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives.

In the nation's largest food-producing and exporting state, California, farmers said they hoped immigration legislation would catch up to the reality of America's food supply.

"Many of the people who tend to the food we eat are not properly documented," said Paul Wenger, president of the California Farm Bureau Federation.

No net: Wallenda walks tight rope across Fla. highway

Aerialist Nik Wallenda, who previously walked across New York's Niagara Falls, takes his high-wire act to Florida, attempting a tightrope walk above downtown Sarasota.

By Andrew Mach, Staff Writer, NBC News

The daredevil who famously tight-roped across Niagara Falls?last year risked his life again; this time, walking a wire 180 feet above a Sarasota, Fla., highway on Tuesday.

But unlike during the highly publicized stunt last summer, Nik Wallenda, 34, didn?t use a safety harness or tether to catch him if he stumbled.

During his walk, he carried a 42-foot-long balancing pole that weighs 45 pounds.?

?It is windy, it?s very windy,? Wallenda could be heard saying while performing the walk Tuesday. ?It?s uncomfortable, of course, but it?s all about the training. You don?t expect it to be this windy but this high up and the water here, it just makes it that much worse.?

Although his contract for the live televised Niagara Falls walk last year required him to wear a harness, Sarasota officials gave him a green light for the walk without the safety line.

?I?m risking my life,? Wallenda said. ?Now it?s just a lot of practice and prayer, that?s about it.?

A Sarasota native, Wallenda said he received warm praise and support for his stunt from other members of his hometown.

"He is the legacy of the Wallenda family," Sarasota City Commissioner Suzanne Atwell told NBC affiliate WFLA in Tampa, Fla. "We have love for Nik. We have passion for Nik. We have faith in Nik and trust in Nik."

Nik Wallenda walks across a tightrope 200 feet above U.S. 41 on Jan. 29 in Sarasota, Fla.

An outspoken critic of using safety nets during high-wire walks, Wallenda comes from a circus family that included his great grandfather, Karl Wallenda, who fell to his death during a performance in Puerto Rico in 1978.

?I have to give props to my great grandfather because I can almost guarantee you that he would have stopped in the middle of this cable and did a headstand," Wallenda said. "That just shows you what an amazing performer he was.?

Self-described as "The King of the Wire," Wallenda has set six Guinness World records for various acrobatic stunts, including the record for highest bicycle ride on a high wire -- 260 feet above the ground. He also hung by his teeth from a helicopter 250 feet off the ground, and he said he plans to tight rope across the Grand Canyon.?

Wallenda?s walk will launch his three-week run as a performer at Circus Sarasota.

How to Sell Your Home By Yourself: Advice for the FSBO

For Sale by Owner, TorontoDear For-Sale-By-Owner Seller on MLS:

I understand that you want to make as much money on your sale as possible and that it isn?t cheap to sell a house. But I fear you don?t know the whole story. Now I won?t pretend to be unbiased ? I?m a REALTOR after all and I make a living by selling houses like yours. But there are a few things you should know about being a For Sale By Owner (FSBO), and I?m betting the company you?re paying peanuts to simply put it on MLS isn?t telling you:

1. If you want to sell your home, you need to be prepared to show it. When I call you to make an appointment to bring my client on Wednesday, telling me that you ?you have hockey Wednesday night but might be home on the weekend so, check back with me on Saturday and I?ll see if I?m around? just doesn?t work. There are plenty of other houses and condos for my client to see, and neither of us is likely to schedule our lives around your unconfirmed schedule. Showing your home is time-consuming and you need to be flexible.?

2. Offering me a $1 commission to bring you a Buyer is not only insulting, it?s not likely going to work. Yes, I will show your home to my client even though your neighbour is offering me 2.5% and the $1 you think my time is worth won?t even cover my gas to drive to your home. But you should know that my Buyer is contractually bound to pay me 2.5% if you don?t, so the real price of your house is 2.5% higher then you have it listed for. Here?s the thing: my Buyer knows I?m worth more than $1 and they don?t want to pay you the same for your house as your neighbour?s house AND pay me 2.5%. I guess they don?t want you to pocket that 2.5% that your neighbour is paying his REALTOR. Buyers can do the math too.

3. I know you think you have nicest house ever and those renovations in 1993 were expensive but you?re probably priced wrong. Pricing a house isn?t easy and it is a moving target. How much I think your house is worth today is probably not the same as I?ll think it?s worth next month or maybe even next week. How much you should sell your home for will change depending on the house that sold last night, the new listings in your neighbourhood that came up for sale today and what?s happening in the overall market. Are you staying on top of the market that closely? And I hope you have good negotiating skills by the way, you?ll need them.?

4. It?s not true that houses sell themselves ? you need to actually market the property. Sure, some people are lucky and have the perfect house in the perfect condition on the best street in a top neighbourhood, and maybe their house will sell itself. But that isn?t most people and it?s probably not you. Even Apple invests in marketing and their products are pretty spectacular.?

5. ?I know you decided to hire a company to help give your home exposure on MLS, but the company that listed your home on MLS for $1,000 probably doesn?t have great success rates and you may just have wasted $1,000. According to this blog, only 52% and 43% of homes listed by the top two companies that provide this service sold in 2012. Those are pretty brutal stats for Toronto?s hot 2012 real estate market. I know those companies tell you that they want to save you money, but they just pocketed over $1,000,000 in fees for houses that didn?t sell. Ouch.

Don?t believe the stats? Consider that Colby Sambrotto, founder of ForSaleByOwner.com, couldn?t sell his own New York condo?so he turned to a realtor?and sold it for $150,000 more than the original list price, covering the commission several times over. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of his product (other than how good it was for making him money; the condo was worth $2.15M).

6. ?I hope you?re prepared for the legal landmines that come with the sale of your house. I know your lawyer can help you with the paperwork, but there?s a lot more to selling a house than just an agreement of purchase and sale. Specifically, I hope you know what you need to disclose to potential buyers so that you stay out of court, and that you?re ready for the ?stuff? that comes up before closing?and it always does. It?s never fun to deal with.

7. ?If you don?t think hiring a REALTOR is worth the money, maybe you?ve been speaking to the wrong REALTOR. Marketing, negotiation, staging, pricing and understanding real estate law are skills that vary significantly from agent to agent and do impact the price you get for your home. ?

Now please understand, Mr. or Mrs. FSBO, that I wish nothing but the best for you. Sometimes selling a home on your own works, sometimes it doesn?t. And if we happen to meet across the negotiating table, I?ll do my best to represent my client?good luck.

New senate bill may provide immigrants legal status | WUFT News

Eleven million undocumented immigrants could soon be provided a path to gain legal status.

The framework for an immigration reform bill was announced Monday by four Republican and four Democratic senators. One of these senators is Marco Rubio of Florida, where the issue is at the forefront for the 2016 presidential election.

Dr. Phillip Williams, director of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida, believes this bill could shape the 2016 presidential election for the Democrats.

Williams said Republicans are concerned as well because the Latino vote has been declining for the party. In the 2012 election, about 25 percent of Latino voters supported the Republican party.

If the Republicans don?t do something to reach out, Williams said, they risk losing this demographic permanently.

Many people are calling this bill an ?amnesty? for those who are illegally in this country, but Williams contends it is instead an ?earned pathway to citizenship.?

In other words, people will have to undergo background checks and learn English in order to eventually become a citizen.

This bill also has the potential to give way to a very positive economic impact, Williams said.

?There?s a lot of immigrants today who don?t have legal status, and they?re not investing because of their precarious legal situation.?

If people are given some financial security, they will be more likely to contribute to the economy in a much bigger way, he said.

The bill is in its early stages and is only a framework at this point in time. It is going to require a lot more work to put together, but President Barack Obama said it ?is his top legislative priority.?

?This is not going to be easy,? Williams said. ?It?s still got a long road to go and it?s not going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination.?

GPS Guide: Brandt Passalacqua's Tips To Shift Away From Stress Eating

Brandt Passalacqua is an author, speaker and founder of Peaceful Weight Loss? through Yoga. Brandt struggled for years with his weight, food, substance addiction and serious illness. Through yoga and meditation, he has discovered an appreciation for his body, regained his health and got his life back.

Brandt says we eat when we're stressed to avoid pain and fear, to distract ourselves from reality or to cope with difficult emotions. Through his process of developing a healthy relationship with food and himself, he discovered several small but useful changes you can make to move away from stress-eating habits. Find his tips and inspiring mantras in his GPS Guide below.

  • 1. Get Outside

It?s easy to accidentally spend your day inside the house, the car and the office. Light, air and even chemicals from plants and trees help us calibrate our bodies and minds properly. If you feel stressed, take a walk -- even if it?s just in front of your office for three minutes. For many, it works just as well as a snack.

  • 2. Eat Regularly

Stress-eating is often a combination of emotions and low blood sugar. Eating regularly (five or six times per day) is a good first step to making sure you are not sugar-crashing. The combination of low blood sugar and a stressful day will make anyone eat a box of cookies.

  • 3. Breathe

Taking a few deep breaths into your abdomen tells your nervous system everything is OK. Pausing throughout your day (try every hour) to take a few breaths will keep you system in check. Stress builds up in the body during the day -- so regular breathing can help.

  • 4. You Are Going To Eat -- So Eat Well

Us overeaters love to pretend today will be the day we won?t eat so much. The reality is most of us are used to stomach stretch (our belly being full). Stock your house with satisfying and healthy food -- because you will eat! Try warm, satisfying soups. Looking for a crunch? Choose air popped popcorn over chips. Need something sweet? Eat sorbet instead of ice cream. Dark chocolate is also an option. Don?t judge yourself harshly for eating -- just try to make healthier choices.

Brandt Passalacqua is an author, speaker and the founder of Peaceful Weight Loss? through Yoga, whose personal journey serves as an inspiration to countless others looking to make peace with food. After struggling with his weight, food, substance addiction, and serious illness, Brandt discovered yoga, and through his practice he developed an appreciation for his body and his health.

Now 100 pounds lighter and at peace in ways he never thought possible, Brandt works as a private yoga therapist helping people meet their own weight loss and wellness goals. In addition to giving lectures and seminars across the country, Brandt trains yoga teachers and health care practitioners in Peaceful Weight Loss? through Yoga. Brandt maintains an office in Western Massachusetts.

(AP) ? A former Michigan Supreme Court justice pleaded guilty to bank fraud Tuesday for concealing assets, including a debt-free Florida home, while urging a bank to let her unload a Michigan house in a short sale, claiming financial hardship.

Diane Hathaway could face up to 18 months in prison under the terms of her deal with federal prosecutors. But her attorney, Steve Fishman, said after the hearing that he will ask a judge to sentence her to probation.

Hathaway, who resigned from the state's highest court last week, left the courthouse without commenting. U.S. District Judge John Corbett O'Meara had allowed her to answer "yes" to a series of questions about her misdeeds that were read by Fishman.

Fishman told reporters that her crime was "dumb. It made no sense." He believes the bank, ING Direct, would have allowed the short sale even if Hathaway had disclosed everything.

"She feels terrible. She let down a lot of people," Fishman said.

In short sales, banks let distressed owners sell properties for less than what's owed on them, providing a significant benefit to borrowers who typically can't afford to keep paying the mortgage but want to avoid foreclosure.

Prosecutors say Hathaway and her husband Michael Kingsley, who has not been charged, transferred their Florida property to a relative so that they could show financial hardship and have a better chance of qualifying to short-sell their Grosse Pointe Park home, which carried a mortgage of more than $1 million.

In a court filing in November, the government said that the couple got out from $600,000 of debt by short-selling the home. But prosecutors indicated Tuesday that the actual loss claimed by the bank appears to be less than $100,000.

ING Direct declined to comment about the case.

Fishman said a sentence of probation seems appropriate when Hathaway returns to court on May 28.

"If this isn't enough, what is?" he said outside court, referring to the embarrassing scandal and a guilty plea from someone who was a statewide public official.

Hathaway's real-estate transactions were first reported last spring by Detroit TV station WXYZ. She refused to speak publicly about them despite calls from critics to explain the suspicious property deals.

The U.S. attorney's office signaled that a criminal probe was in progress when it filed a civil lawsuit in November to seize the Windermere, Fla., home as the fruit of bank fraud. The government is dropping that lawsuit as part of the deal with Hathaway.

Hathaway, a former Wayne County judge, shook up the Supreme Court when she defeated Republican Chief Justice Cliff Taylor in the 2008 election. Democrats then controlled the court for two years before GOP victories in the 2010 election put Republicans back in the majority.

Hathaway quit the court on Jan. 21, halfway through an eight-year term. Gov. Rick Snyder has yet to name her replacement, but the new justice will expand the Republican majority to 5-2, at least through 2014.

Vine Has a Porn Problem Because Of Course It Does

It's actually pretty surprising that it took everyone three days to figure out that Twitter's new cell phone camera-powered video sharing app, Vine, is perfect for porn. Vine has it all. It can record reasonably high quality videos of anything you want, on-the-go, and post it publicly for all the Internet to see. You add hashtags so that people can easily find special interest content. There's even a little comments section so that you can share your thoughts about the distinctively addictive six-second loops. Heck, we'd be surprised if people didn't immediately start to post pictures of their genitals doing what genitals do. They probably did, actually. Everyone else was just too busy watching pictures of their friends pets and children to notice.

But alas, by Sunday everyone had noticed. Although it had already been mentioned on smaller tech blogs, the Vine porn problem started to become widely known after New York Times reporter Nick Bilton tweeted, "Friend: 'So are people using Vine for porn yet?' Me: "'Nah, I don't think so.' Friend: 'Check the hashtag?#porn." Both: "Holy ****!'" And the thing is, he's totally right. TechCrunch published a post?on the NSFW trick -- #NSFW works for porn seekers, too, by the way -- broaching the topic of Apple's App Store coming down hard on the adult-only content. It's against the rules, see, and Apple has a history of yanking apps that become magnets for all things naughty. The Verge followed up a few minutes later with the headline, "Apple has a porn problem, and it's about the get worse."

This got us thinking: These App Store restrictions on pornographic content have been around as long as the App Store. Surely in the past five or so years, the moderators know a porn magnet when they see one. Vine is hardly the first video-sharing app to make it through the approval process, not to mention the many photo-sharing apps. (And Apple's certainly not afraid of enforcing those rules, as we learned when it yanked the 500px app?after it started to become home to "pornographic images and material.") It's no anomaly that Vine made through, though. As virtually every new video- or photo-sharing service has shown us since the dawn of the Internet, from Flickr to ChatRoulette, it's very difficult to keep these sites or apps G-rated. So the companies either learn how to police it well, like Flickr does, or they wither and die, as ChatRoulette did.

So it's hard to believe that the App Store didn't consider the fact that people might upload pictures of their penises to Vine. It's more likely that they did and decided to see how Twitter would deal with it, when it became a problem. After all, Vine is not going to be the last video-sharing app to be built and it certainly won't be the last porn-friendly app to be built either. So Twitter gets to play guinea pig and navigate the tricky terrain of moderating user-generated content in real time. It's a good thing they already have a boatload of experience doing that on Twitter! See, look how fast they came up with a solution. A company statement reads:

?

Users can report videos as inappropriate within the product if they believe the content to be sensitive or inappropriate (e.g. nudity, violence, or medical procedures). Videos that have been reported as inappropriate have a warning message that a viewer must click through before viewing the video.

Uploaded videos that are reported and determined to violate our guidelines will be removed from the site, and the user that posted the video may be terminated.

Twitter being Twitter -- that is, big proponents of the free flow of information -- they stop short of defining "inappropriate" in Vine's terms and conditions. Unlike Twitter, which has been free to operate on the whole of the Internet, however, Vine lives in Apple's house now. If Twitter's hands off policy doesn't do enough to keep smut off the iPhone, Apple will surely pull the plug, and then, well -- then we'll be back to where we were last week.

Researchers Find Consistent Epigenetic 'Signatures' In Prostate ...

Scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center found in a genome-wide analysis of 13 men with metastatic prostate cancer that there were consistent epigenetic ?signatures? or ?marks? across all metastatic tumors in each of the subject men. The discovery contradicts the current belief that epigenetic marks that sit on the nuclear DNA of cancer cells and alter gene expression vary so much within each individual?s cancer that they have little or no value as targets for therapy or as biomarkers for treatment response and predicting disease severity.

Published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, the study describes the genomic analysis of 13 men who died of advanced prostate cancer and whose tissue samples were collected after a rapid autopsy. The researchers sampled from three to six metastatic sites in each of the men and one to three samples of their normal tissue were also analyzed.

?Knowing both the genetic and epigenetic changes that happen in lethal prostate cancers can eventually help us identify the most aggressive cancers earlier and develop new therapies that target those changes,? says Srinivasan Yegnasubramanian, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. ?But there has been an open question of whether epigenetic changes are consistently maintained across all metastatic sites of an individual?s cancer.?

The research team found that while methylation patterns vary from one patient to another, many methylation patterns occur ?very consistently? within different metastatic sites in an individual patient. They identified more than 1,000 regions of the genome where various types of DNA methylation were consistently maintained within their 13 subjects? genomes.

According to Dr. Yegnasubramanian, ?As they evolve and grow, cancer cells acquire and maintain changes that enable them to continue thriving?? We know that cancer cells maintain and pass along genetic changes in the nucleus of cells across metastatic sites, and our research now shows that epigenetic changes also are maintained to nearly the same degree.?

Yegnasubramanian also said, ?Our study shows that for prostate cancer, at least, each person develops his own path to cancer and metastasis, and we can find a signature of that path in the epigenetic marks within their tumors.? He also believes that certain of these epigenetic changes can be grouped into clusters to be used as biomarkers signaling the presence of a lethal cancer or even as treatment targets.

A better understanding of the genetic and the epigenetic structure of advanced prostate cancer will lead us to new bio-markers and treatment options for men with advanced prostate cancer. I am hoping that future research will also evaluate the genetic structure of prostate cancer still in the gland to allow us to make better decisions on what specific cancers need treatment and which can be simply monitored.
