Obese Kids May Be at Higher Risk for Heart Disease

TUESDAY, July 24 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers who found that two out of three severely obese children already have at least one risk factor for heart disease say their findings are cause for concern in light of increasing rates of childhood obesity.

The study authors assessed heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, diabetes and cholesterol in 307 severely obese children, aged 2 to 18 years, in the Netherlands.

Boys tended to be more severely obese than girls at a younger age, while the reverse was true for girls, according to the study published online July 23 in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.

Overall, two-thirds (67 percent) of the children had at least one risk factor for heart disease. When it came to specific risk factors, 56 percent of the children had high blood pressure, 54 percent had high levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol, 14 percent had high blood sugar and just under 1 percent had type 2 diabetes.

The researchers were surprised to find that 62 percent of children aged 12 and younger had one or more heart disease risk factors.

Nearly one in three of the children came from one-parent families. Only one child's obesity was due to medical rather than lifestyle factors, Dr. Joana Kist-van Holthe, of the department of public and occupational health at EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, and colleagues noted.

"Internationally accepted criteria for defining severe obesity, and guidelines for early detection and treatment of severe obesity and [underlying ill health] are urgently needed," the researchers concluded in a journal news release.

By mid-week at Boy Scout camp, it was usually pretty clear who was skipping showers. After all, it was close quarters in those dank tents. I remember spending a week every summer with hundreds of other prepubescent boys in North Carolina's great outdoors -- where home became a world of latrines, ticks and total lack of privacy -- and loving it. Every day brought a merit badge free-for-all that began with throwing on our starchy beige uniforms at Reveille and pledging allegiance before breakfast.

Scouts spent every waking (and sleeping) moment together during those annual campouts, and nowhere was this more evident than during afternoon swims at the lake. More than a rule or expectation, the Buddy System was our one real duty: stick together and look out for each other. God help you if you weren't clutching your buddy's wrist when the lifeguard blew the whistle.

The irony of the Buddy System wasn't lost on me this week, when a committee of the Boy Scouts of America affirmed its long-standing discriminatory policy. "We do not grant membership to individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals," they said, adding that "same-sex attraction should be introduced and discussed outside" of the BSA.

This language sounds more direct and deliberately bigoted in a year when President Obama affirmed his support for same-sex couples who want to wed. While the leader of the free world says it's okay to love, the BSA insists there's no place for it. In my younger years, Scouting offered an incubator for becoming a young man. When Dad volunteered as an assistant Scoutmaster for my troop, he taught us how to light a grill, use a pocketknife properly, and clean a cast-iron skillet. I'm sure he never expected to shoot pool with his son at a gay bar in West Hollywood years later.

When I called my younger brother Scott this week in California, he had not heard the latest news in the BSA saga. No surprise there -- he packs his schedule to capacity. When he's not overseeing student affairs at a major university, he's tutoring students prepping for their SATs. Or running marathons. Or squeezing in a disciplined CrossFit workout and the occasional reality show audition. Scott once spent months traveling the country aboard a cruise ship, where he led an events team charged with entertaining tourists. He later earned his Master's in higher ed administration from Harvard -- they even named him class marshal. LinkedIn seems to have been created for Scott.

Yet in addition to my brother's laundry list of achievements, Scott also happens to be gay. A gay Eagle Scout, at that. And though he once trained as a camp counselor, today Scott wouldn't be allowed anywhere near a campground, much less a Scout meeting.

This summer marks a milestone for Scott; he came out to the family 10 years ago, on June 18, 2002. He was 19. While the news did not surprise me, it blindsided my parents. At the time we were a conservative, church-going family from the South just beginning to grasp and adapt to Scott's bombshell news.

When we spoke this week, I asked Scott to define "morally straight," one of the tenets of the Scout Oath we were made to recite as kids. "There's a difference between having morals about not killing someone and not stealing from them," he told me, "and there are different morals about being accepting of human beings because of how they are born."

James Dale, a fellow Eagle Scout whom the BSA banned in 1990 after learning that he is gay, elaborated further in an email:

"Unfortunately Scouting has continued a hateful and destructive policy telling young people that gays are not 'moral,'" Dale wrote. "Every day this outmoded policy continues the less relevant Scouting is becoming. Paid Scout executives are alienating the organization from fair-minded Americans."

Another milestone this summer arrives next week: July 29 will mark 20 years since Lambda Legal fought the BSA for discriminating against and expelling Dale. Such bigotry is illegal in New Jersey, and, in 1999, the state's Supreme Court ruled against the BSA's ban. It was a brief victory; the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the decision the following year. Boy Scouts of America et al. v. Dale held that requiring the BSA to reinstate Dale "violates the Boy Scouts' First Amendment right of expressive association." In simple terms, the Court protected the BSA -- a private, Christian-based organization -- to exclude anyone of its choosing. This has also included atheist Scouts and Scoutmasters.

The arrogance and ignorance of this week's affirmation cannot be overstated. BSA executives have for years erroneously aligned being gay with being a pedophile, and this latest precedent a secret committee made official this week will do nothing to prevent more youth bullying and suicide.

Eagle Scout Zach Wahls, the son of two lesbian mothers, is petitioning BSA national president Wayne Perry and his staff to out the members of this unnamed committee. As of this writing, Wahls stands about 5,000 supporters short of his 50,000-signature goal through Change.org.

A public records search reveals that Perry gave $50,000 to the super PAC backing Mitt Romney, Restore Our Future, earlier this year; Perry contributed another $30,800 to the Republican National Committee in April. Is it not contradictory for the BSA leader to support the candidate opposing the president of the United States? After all, Obama -- as has every president since 1910 -- serves as honorary president of the BSA. Perry and Obama, in a matter of speaking, belong to the same Buddy System.

Scott and I earned our Eagle Scout award a few months apart. The rank requires longevity, dedication to a community leadership project, earning an eclectic selection of required merit badges, and doing it all before we get interested in girls -- or boys. We Eagles knew our first aid, our knots, and could even make a life preserver out of a pair of jeans in the middle of a lake -- I'd be lying if I said I retained everything I learned. But the point of getting that far was to demonstrate our commitment to a well-rounded knowledge of personal responsibility, respect for others, smart financial decisions, fair leadership and independence in the world and in the wild.

"I saw it as stepping stones -- I just wanted to get to the top," Scott admitted to me about the years he hid his sexuality while a Boy Scout. "It taught me that I wanted to be fair across the board. I hold everyone to the same standard, and I expect the same from everyone. So I think I learned that from the Boy Scouts."

Though Scouting taught us plenty about public service and volunteering our time, it fails today to recognize true leaders like my brother. It frowns upon those young men who want to engage peers of other faiths, cultures and identities. The BSA's latest assertion to exclude interested applicants willy-nilly represents a truly broken brotherhood.

Scott's coming out a decade ago strengthened our family. Mom has grown into the go-to public speaker for her PFLAG chapter in North Carolina, and she frequently addresses the top brass at corporations like McDonald's and Duke Energy, urging them to recognize the rights of LGBT employees and their spouses. Mom is an outspoken gay-rights activist. This week I asked her to check the closet for her sons' Scout merit-badge sashes. Mine boasted 28 patches. Mom had to dig deeper for Scott's; his was packed away in the attic. His merit badge count: 32. Showoff.

As for Dad, when he proudly walked into Mother Lode to have a drink with Scott last year in Los Angeles, he remembers Charlie the bartender choking up. "You're the first dad we've ever had in here," he told him.

I once wore my Eagle Scout award as a badge of honor, a proud rite of passage attained by few other boys on their own paths to manhood. But 11 unnamed BSA officials undermined that stepping stone this week. They proved that playing politics means exploiting religion and alienating and intimidating an unknown number of boys at their most sensitive age. One thing that stuck with me from my days in Scouting was how we always made sure to leave our campsites cleaner than how we found them. We never made them worse.

The Boy Scouts of America has not only reneged on its commitment to God and country -- it has destroyed the landscape, and crushed its own Buddy System.

In our culture, access to credit is often considered a right or an entitlement. And the big bad banks are often blamed for not helping small businesses. In my opinion, the big banks often deserve that criticism ? but not always.

At MultiFunding, we hear all kinds of interesting stories from small-business owners. Typically, when businesses have trouble raising capital, it takes some work to figure out what the real issues are. Many times, the small-business owners have wasted months trying to solve their problems with the wrong lenders. Other times, the business has a serious issue that makes it all but impossible to finance. In these instances, the banks have good reasons not to lend.

Here?s an example: A hairdresser recently called us to ask for help in getting a loan. She was exhausted, at her wits? end and angry at the bank. She explained that she owned the studio where she worked and that her mortgage loan was coming up for renewal. While she had a lot of equity in her property, she said, the lenders she approached expressed concern because she had a one-woman shop ? and they said they considered this deal too risky for them.

Judging just from those facts, my initial reaction was that if there really was value in her property and if she was current on all of her payments, we would probably be able to help her. I was confident that we could find a Small Business Administration lender that would be interested in giving her a loan. After all, if everything went bad, the lender would end up with a property that was worth about twice the value of the loan.

Once we dug deeper, however, we learned some things about the borrower that created problems. First of all, she was on payment plans with three government entities. This immediately knocked her out of the running for an S.B.A. loan ? you have to be current on all of your taxes before you can benefit from an S.B.A. guarantee. We can sometimes solve this situation by paying off the back taxes with a six- or 12-month merchant cash advance loan before the borrower gets the S.B.A. loan. But in this case the back taxes were too large, more than she could borrow on this kind of loan.

The hairdresser?s second problem was that she had called her mortgage company a few months earlier and explained that she was having a tough time. She asked the company if she could make interest-only payments for a while. This was an honorable thing to do, but it is likely to give any potential new lender pause. And that was now an issue.

The hairdresser did have some options. For example, she might qualify for a ?hard money? real estate loan ? a bridge loan in which the lender takes five points upfront and then charges 12 to 14 percent interest for one year until the borrower can refinance through a more traditional source. While this might be her most appealing option, it would come with significant risk ? the interest payments alone could destroy her business. As an alternative, she could sell?the building, pay off the current note holder, and take the cash. If she took this approach, she would lose the tax advantages of owning her property, but at least she could focus on running her shop and generating cash flow.

If, instead, she decided she wanted to keep her building and eventually find a way to refinance the mortgage, she would need to increase her revenue quickly ? most likely by adding other hairdressers with existing books of business. At that moment, she was simply trying to do too much on her own.

Kitty Wells, country music star, dies at 92

NASHVILLE (Reuters) - Kitty Wells, the "Queen of Country Music," died this morning at her home in Nashville surrounded by family members, of complications from a stroke. She was 92.

Among those mourning her today was Loretta Lynn, whose own rise to popularity came after Wells opened the doors for strong female voices in country music. "Kitty Wells will always be the greatest female country singer of all times," said Lynn in a statement released on her web site.

"She was my hero. If I had never heard of Kitty Wells, I don't think I would have been a singer myself. I wanted to sound just like her, but as far as I am concerned, no one will ever be as great as Kitty Wells.

"She truly is the Queen of Country Music."

Wells, born as Ellen Muriel Deason Wright, actually began performing on local radio in Nashville, but her ascent to stage stardom began in 1937 with husband Johnnie, half of the duo Johnnie & Jack. He died in 2011.

She was the first female singer to reach the top of the country charts with her 1952 song "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," an answer to Hank Thompson's "The Wild Side of Life," which made the argument God indeed makes such angels.

Wells was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1976.

"Kitty Wells was a 33-year-old wife and mother when her immortal recording of ?It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels' suddenly made her a star," according to the Hall of Fame's biography.

"Other female country singers of her day were trying their hands at hard-living, honky-tonk songs, but it was the intense and piercing style of Kitty Wells, with her gospel-touched vocals and tearful restraint that resonated with country audiences of the time and broke the industry barriers for women."

Wells was born in Nashville to a musical family. She first began performing on the radio with her two sisters and a cousin, the quartet going by the name of the Deason Sisters.

She married Wright in 1937 and she joined by her husband and his sister, Louise, to perform as Johnnie Wright and the Harmony Girls.

It was two years later that Wright began performing with Jack Anglin as the duo Johnnie & Jack.

While she performed with them as a girl singer in the 1940s, her husband began calling her "Kitty Wells," a name taken from a 19th century folk song.

'SWEET, GENTLE LADY'

Harold Bradley, 86, the venerable Nashville session guitarist whose brother, Owen Bradley, produced so many of her recordings, said there was no better person to work with than Wells.

"I worked a lot of her sessions, of course, that Owen produced," said Bradley, the most-recorded guitarist in history. "She was the most sweet, gentle lady. She always knew her songs when she came in and she was very easy to work with."

In addition to "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," which sold 800,000 copies in its initial release in the summer of 1952, according to the Hall of Fame biography, Wells sang "Release Me," "Making Believe," "I Can't Stop Loving You" among other classic songs.

She garnered 35 Billboard Top Ten records and 81 charted singles.

Michael McCall, writer and editor at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, said Wells' importance to the emergence of women singing hit records "cannot be overstated."

He said Wells proved to the industry that a woman singer could sell and headline big shows.

"She opened the doors for everybody that came after her," McCall said. "It was just a huge shift in how things were perceived. It was so important that it happened."

He said Honky Tonk Angels was controversial at the time, and some radio stations wouldn't play it. She wasn't allowed to sing the song on the NBC segment of the Grand Ole Opry when it first came out.

"The fans rallied around her to prove the record industry wrong," said McCall.

"She was one of the major recording artists of the 1950s and into the 1960s," said McCall. "She has had so many country classics and so many songs that came from a woman's point of view that were often about wayward and faithless men."

Her straightforward manner and subject matter was a major influence on the song-writing and singing of Lynn and Dolly Parton, setting the stage for today's female country stars.

"We live in an age when people over-sing so much and put so much emphasis on the emotion. She showed sometimes it's more emotional by having restraint rather than trying to oversell it," said McCall.

Among her many honors, she was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991, the same year as Bob Dylan and John Lennon were so honored.

She was just the third country singer to be get that most prestigious award, after Hank Williams and Roy Acuff.

She finally gave up touring in 2007 and continued to live a quiet life, so much differently than the subjects of her songs.

Her funeral will be Friday.

1 tsp. curry powder
1/4 tsp. turmeric
1 tsp. ground ginger
2 tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped

Preparation:

Cook rice using pot in pot method and set aside in a warm place.

In the pressure cooker, heat oil and saut chicken and onions over medium-high heat until chicken is lightly browned. Add water, garlic, oil, and soy sauce, then add chili powder, curry, turmeric and ground ginger and stir till well blended.

Lock the lid in place and bring to pressure. Lower heat and cook for 4 minutes at 15psi. Allow pressure to drop by the natural release method for 4 minutes, then release the remaining pressure using the quick release method or automatic release method and remove lid. Stir in parsley and serve over warm rice.

Chicken and Spanish Rice ? This will quickly become a family favorite once you give it a try.

Ingredients:

3 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breast or thighs
3 tbsp. olive oil
1 chorizo sausage thinly sliced (optional, but it really adds a nice flavor!)
1 small onion, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 red bell pepper, cored, seeded and diced
1 large ripe tomato peeled
1 cup uncooked long grain white rice
1/2 cup frozen peas
3 cups chicken stock or broth
1 tsp. salt

Preparation:

Salt and pepper the chicken and heat olive oil in pressure cooker. Add onion, garlic, red bell pepper and tomato and cook until the onion is soft. Add rice and cook for 1 minute. Add peas, stock, salt chicken and chorizo with any accumulated juices. Stir well.

Lock the lid, bring to pressure, then lower heat and cook for 7 minutes at 15psi. Allow pressure to drop by quick release or auto release, then remove lid. Serve and enjoy!

Makes 4 to 6, family size servings.

Chicken Casserole ? Casseroles are great for company and the kids love them too!

Ingredients:

3 medium potatoes
3 to 3-1/2 lbs. boneless skinless chicken breasts
Salt to taste
2 slices of bacon, cut into 1 pieces
1/4 lb. fresh mushrooms
12 very small pearl onions, peeled
1 tsp. flour
1/4 cup chicken stock

Preparation:

Peel the potatoes. Create small balls using a melon scoop. Sprinkle the chicken with salt. Place bacon in pressure cooker and saut until it has rendered its fat. Remove the bacon and set aside, leaving the fat in the pressure cooker. Add the potatoes to the fat and quickly saut until lightly brown. Remove the potatoes and set aside. Add chicken pieces and brown on all sides, then remove. Add onions and mushrooms and saut for one minute. Sprinkle in the flour, then add the stock and return the chicken, bacon and potatoes to the pressure cooker.

Lock the lid in place, bring to pressure. Then lower heat and cook for 8 minutes at 15 psi. Allow pressure to drop by quick release or auto release and remove the lid. A family of 4 will enjoy this yummy casserole as will your guests!

The government has pushed a measure to give traditional courts the force of law; some fear the move would trample hard-won rights.

Her crime? She had broken customary law by calling the police to investigate a burglary at her house without informing the village headman, a traditional leader of the Mbashe royal family of the Xhosa nation, and had insulted his dignity by refusing to appear before his court.
These are not offenses under South African law, but Ms. Ludonga, like millions of other South Africans who live in rural areas, effectively lives in two countries at once. She is a citizen of a modern African democracy that --, then enacted one of the world?s most admired constitutions. She is also a subject of an ethnic monarchy with broad, but largely unwritten, authority under traditional courts.
The tension between those two sometimes-contradictory worlds has reached a breaking point in the past year as South Africa?s government pushes a measure to give traditional courts the force of law, compelling people in many rural areas to appear before them to answer charges that they have violated community traditions.
The fierce debate over the bill, which is unlikely to pass Parliament but unlikely to be completely snuffed out either, has exposed a fault line running deep in South African society between traditionalists ? including leaders like President Jacob Zuma, who calls himself a proud Zulu and practices -- ? and a racially diverse but largely Westernized cultural establishment that fears a return to traditional values will trample hard-won constitutional rights.
?Many of us are very worried that there is an attempt under way to roll back rights and turn rural people into subjects rather than citizens,? said Nomboniso Gasa, a women?s rights activist who has fought giving traditional courts more power.
In the best of circumstances, these community courts are forums for resolving local disputes by consensus using age-old customs. Nelson Mandela, who was born to a royal family not far from Candu and spent his youth watching traditional leaders rule, wrote in his autobiography that he had been ?profoundly influenced by observing the regent and his court.?
Though the traditional leaders were not elected, the courts were deeply democratic, Mr. Mandela argued. ?Democracy meant all men were to be heard, and a decision was taken together as a people,? he wrote.
But traditional courts do not always live up to Mr. Mandela?s bucolic memories. Law often turns out to be simply what traditional leaders say it is. It can be deeply conservative and run counter to the freedoms and rights outlined in the Constitution. Traditional leaders, for instance, have been at the forefront of efforts to strip legal protections for gay men and lesbians.
Rural blacks long lived under separate laws from those governing whites, a system solidified by apartheid, which created Bantustans, the nominally independent states created as ?homelands? for South Africa?s blacks.
These scraps of often-infertile land became de facto reservations for blacks, who had few rights outside them and were not permitted to live elsewhere without permission. Their leaders were monarchs serving at the pleasure of the apartheid government, and ultimately came to be seen as its stooges.
Though these monarchs and chiefs never really went away, the end of apartheid left them outside the corridors of power. The traditional courts bill is seen as an effort by the African National Congress, the governing party, to win their support at the polls.
The potential revival of the courts worries some women?s rights activists.
?Rural women especially will find it very difficult to assert their rights against these courts,? said Sizani Ngubane of the --. ?They are very much marginalized at the rural level.?
Take Ms. Ludonga?s case. She is a 47-year-old grade-school teacher and community activist who started an organization to fight domestic violence and raise awareness about H.I.V. But she clashed with the royal family of her village.
The headman, Mzwandile Nqwena, is her brother-in-law, and she became entangled in a family feud when her husband died in 1999. In 2010, she called the police to report a burglary at her home. The headman took offense that she had not informed him first.
She resisted when she was called before a traditional court. But the headman increased the pressure.
?When I went before them, they said, ?You lack discipline, you are so rude,? ? Ms. Ludonga said.
She said she apologized, hoping to keep the peace. But they demanded she pay a fine.
?I was so hurt,? she said. ?I stood up again and said: ?I am alone; I am a widow. I cannot afford to buy these things.? ?
But the court insisted.
For months she resisted paying, but she became an outcast, she said. When her house was damaged in a rainstorm, no one helped her. Alone and afraid, she borrowed money to buy the $300 worth of food and drink.
South Africa?s traditional leaders say that customary law helps people live in harmony, and takes into account traditions not in the Constitution.
?We are in Africa, and this our African traditional justice system, which has been there from time immemorial,? said Kgoshigadi Mothapo, a queen from Limpopo Province and deputy chairwoman of the National House of Traditional Leaders. ?The Constitution is not really based on Afrocentric values.?
Some rural people support traditional justice out of deep disillusionment with democracy and its institutions in South Africa. ?I trust the chief because he knows me, he knows where I was born, he knows where I live,? said Mthembu Nelisiwe, a woman from a small village in KwaZulu-Natal Province. ?I can speak to him face to face. The people in Parliament don?t know me.?
Frustrated with allegations of corruption and incompetence involving the current government, some people say they yearn for a simpler, more orderly time when chiefs and kings ruled.
?We are having a lot of problems with kids who don?t want to go to school, who are drinking and getting pregnant,? said Dingeni Jobe, a traditional leader in rural KwaZulu-Natal. ?I feel that power needs to be given back to the chiefs so we can rule in a right way.?
Traditional courts clearly play an important role in resolving local disputes. In Manhlaneni, a village in Eastern Cape Province, Chief Luthando Dinwayo presided over a hearing recently in a tiny courtroom with a corrugated tin roof. The closest magistrate court was 15 miles and an expensive bus ride away, while this courtroom was within walking distance for the people involved.
One case involved a marital dispute ? a woman had run away from her husband to work in Cape Town. The husband, who had paid a bride price in cows to his father-in-law, suspected that his wife?s father had helped her leave, and he wanted the cows back. In a second case, a villager stood accused of grazing his seven cows on communal land set aside for conservation.
?I am guilty,? the accused villager, Zizamele Maqi, whispered.
The tribal council, made up of four women and five men, dismissed the defendants and began their deliberations. In the marriage dispute, they decided the wife must be brought to court and asked her wishes. If she no longer wanted to be married, her father must return her bride price. In the second case, some council members argued for a fine of about $50. But Chief Dinwayo objected. The village had already agreed that the fine for this offense was about $2 per cow.
?We cannot change this,? he said. ?It is our duty as traditional leaders to be fair.?
