Approaches to Parenting that Will Make Your Home More ...

Many new parents quickly realize that parenting is a full time job with many challenges. The experience can be very stressful, but usually you manage to get through it and years from now you?ll wonder why you made such a big deal out of it. What?s tragic is when real damage to the relationship between parents and children occurs.

It can be extremely difficult to reconcile with a grown child who?s become estranged from you. With the right approach, though, you can almost always become a better parent and learn how to interact with your children in a more effective way. Many parents would like another chance at raising their kids from birth; while this isn?t possible, the next best thing is to do everything you can to improve things from this moment onward.

Children of toddler age are full of emotion, and of course they experience common feelings such as embarrassment and even humiliation. When it comes to disciplining children in a public place, it should be done right after they?ve committed the offense. It is best to do this rather than waiting to get home, or even worse, deciding to ignore it because you are out in public. Yet you shouldn?t do this in public view, as you don?t want to create a spectacle.

You should keep this issue between you and them, as having an audience can be damaging to the child?s feeling of self worth. Embarrassing children in such a manner is not good for them in the long run, and won?t improve their behavior.

It is possible to create the type of structured environment in the home whereby the child knows it exists. By doing so you can make it known to children what is and is not allowed. This type of structured approach will bring about a more harmonious family environment, as there won?t be a need to argue about every little issue that comes up.

It?s not good for children to grow up without a set of guiding principles, as it leaves them with nothing to grasp onto. The affects of this insecurity at home will extend to other situations as well, such as how the child performs and behaves in school. That much needed feeling of security will be absent, and that sets the stage of feeling insecure.

One of the worst parenting mistakes you can make is to allow children to break the rules you?ve established without suffering any consequences. What we mean is not following through with the very consequences we have communicated with your children. Some children become very skilled at manipulating their parents and making them feel guilty for meting out discipline and this isn?t good for either you or them. It can be very hard to turn things around once your children know that the limits you set are not really firm. However, if you stick to your guns and stand your ground, then in time they will come to respect that. You?re actually doing them a favor by teaching them early on that there can be unpleasant results when they break a rule. It is, of course, best to get off to a good start with your children, as then you can raise them in an atmosphere of mutual caring and trust. It will only confuse your children if you?re always changing tactics on them, so try to find an approach that works and use it consistently.
